Description

Following the critically acclaimed 2014 Game of the Year winner Wasteland 2, the RPG series that pioneered the post-apocalyptic genre in video games returns with Wasteland 3.

In Wasteland 3 you take command of a squad of Desert Rangers, lawmen and women in a post-nuclear world, trying to rebuild society from the ashes. More than a century after the bombs fell, you’re fighting a losing battle to keep your beloved Arizona alive. Then the self-proclaimed Patriarch of Colorado radios, promising aid if you'll do a job he can only entrust to an outsider—rescue his land from the ambitions of his three bloodthirsty children.

You’re dispatched on a desperate quest from the scorching deserts to the snowy mountains to start from scratch, building a new base, finding a snow-worthy vehicle, training new recruits, and fighting your way through hostile frozen wastes. All the while, you'll have to decide who to trust in this land torn apart by corruption, intrigue, warring factions, crazed cultists, cutthroat gangs, and bitter sibling rivalries. Build a reputation for yourself by making decisions that will profoundly impact Colorado, its inhabitants and the story you experience. Will you be Colorado’s savior or its worst nightmare?

Wasteland 3 is a squad-based RPG from inXile entertainment, featuring challenging tactical turn-based combat and a deep, reactive story full of twists, turns, and brutal ethical decisions that will keep you hooked whether you’re a Wasteland veteran or new to the series. Create a squad of up to six Rangers and customize them with perks and abilities geared to your playstyle. You even get your own battle truck, which you can upgrade into a hardened war beast, bristling with weapons, to help mow down your enemies.

Very solid

For reference, I did not like WL2. I tried playing it twice, managed to get through it the second time, but overall did not really enjoy WL2. It had some glaring issues with writing, narrative flow and encounter design. WL3 is a huge improvement over WL2, with decent writing, much better encounter design and so far the narrative flow is much more enjoyable. On top of that, the combat mechanics, the best part of WL2 just feels so much better. It's tight and punchy, with not too much going on, but enough to feel deep. Graphics: - Don't expect much here, far from current gen, but the aesthetic is done justice quite well. Looks good enough to keep you immersed, but its not impressive by today's standards. Writing and dialogue - there's a bit of American hokiness in the dialogue but otherwise the dialogue and writing manages to be heavy and thoughtful and tinged with the occasional levity. It feels alot more mature than WL2 while also feeling more fun (for me at least). Tough dialogue choices from time to time, there were many instances where I stopped and seriously pondered what the best choice was for me. But the game never slapped my hand as if I made the "wrong" choice, only had the world react realistically to it. RPG mechanics - weapons are balance quite a bit more, with pistols having an interesting niche as the fastest "strike meter filling" weapons. - character progression and skills is pretty much the same as WL2, with some much needed skill consolidation and the elimination of skill rolls (which I will contend is a good change) Combat - combat feel faster and punchier. - There seems to be more cover to utilize without having so much that you can just abuse it. - I'm not sure what to think of the revive mechanic. It softens the hard edges of combat, but seems a bit much when you can revive your squaddies 7 times in a combat. Overall a very solid RPG and well worth it. I'd give it a 4.5 star if I could because its not groundbreaking, but very good.

Initial disappointment - turned to joy!

I have played the game pretty extensively now, and I was intially kind of disappointed with it... My biggest gripe which has been resolved for the most part now was with the load times, which were interminable. I estimate I spent out of forty hours of play - more than 2 hours in load screens. My computer isn't particularly shabby, but I put this on my SSD and the load times were not improved by this until the most recent patch. My enjoyment of the game has increased considerably since then. Don't get me wrong, I have had fun playing the game, though, for the most part. I prefer the desert wastes to the frozen wastes - the aesthetic doesn't really do it for me, but as someone who really enjoyed WL2, that is to be expected - change is hard. The technical shortcomings in the game did seem to hold it back - it looks dated as heck, and no matter the tweaking, it still kind of looks way better in the screenshots than it does in play. ... The sound design is excellent as is the soundtrack and the voice acting is B+, good for such a huge game... I think there needed to be more streamlining to the systems in the game but I found it not a huge chore to play through, though I wish there was more than just the combat options to solve some fo the scenarios I went into. It is replayable, and it's a game that I will keep installed, and although I had felt gipped at not getting a second copy (Fig backer for the special edition where they were going to give a digital and physical copy) when it was released, it didn't detract from the experience that I'm NOW having with the game (plus they gave me a wicked Scorpitron statue instead!). The interminable load times now reduced HUGELY, I feel this game is worth picking up, but I wouldn't have a month ago.

Flawed Sequel To A Fantastic Game

I greatly enjoyed Wasteland 2 (I still haven't played the original Wasteland or it's remaster), my problem with Wasteland 3 was less with the mechanics and the game itself and more with the strange decisions in world characters make. Those decisions run incredibly counter to the characters and seemed present only to create "tough choices" for the player. Most of them come across as forced. The gameplay itself is not without flaws either but they are generally small and under the '"just annoying" variety. The game does suffer from some unusually long load screens. Overall I'd recommend this game to people looking for tactical RPGs but the overall story writing was very disappointing to me.

Great Game Mostly

Really fun, but has a audio balancing issue. Occasionally even with sound settings down 50%, different sound effects, notably the "prepare" chime during fights, will randomly pop extremely loudly, so much so that i was bleeding from my ears while wearing headphones. You'll be playing for a while with sound settings you think are reasonable and then "BOOM", this game takes a battering ram to your eardrums when wearing headphones. get it on sale
