This is a pretty good game overall, but it's plagued by minor inconviniences and inconsistencies that make it frustrating. Usually I try to avoid walkthroughs of story rich games, but Vampyr virtually demands one or it will punish you for not reading the minds of the devs. The combat is servicable, if not very inspired, but it's the writing that shines here. It almost might have been better simply as a virtual novel.
Story-focused game with dark souls-like combat sounds nice when you first think about it, but then this game comes. Beginning is realy immersive and intense with all that "becoming vampire" and stuff, all introductions to game mechanics, especialy districts, bloodsucking and hint gathering are actualy can be realy excting, but...
Every hour i spent in Vampyr was more and more tiring and boring experience. While story being somewhat interesing (with realy weak finale, but its my opinion), game likes to overflow you with unintersing dialogues that often are repeating itselfs, rarely offering something new to the story, its probably more about their point of view, but it didn't convinced me and made me skip more dialogue with the progress of the story.
Combat was ok, sometimes ok. They want to bring some dark souls combat like i mentioned earlier, but from start to the end it have realy janky feeling and biggest challenge was containing bs that often happening during encounters. Enemies can often spam you to death with your attacks, most weapons you can use are either still bugged or just weak even with upgrades you can put to them and just idea of combat system in this game gave me feeling of being more like human with some powers than powerful vampire with ancient bloodline like game tries to tell us.
Whole game I was underleveled. Guess its idea to kinda force player to kill district members beacuse they give huge amount of exp, but every kill leads to disastrous impact which finds me quickly pushed to the wall while still being kinda underleveled.
Overwall it isn't bad game. Soundtrack and visuals are beatuiful, but game itself is clunky to the end
Here are my thoughts after 60 hours of gameplay (2 playthroughs)
- Story: it does not keep you intrigued, but it is somewhat compelling nonetheless. It flows effortlessly from one mission to the next, making you travel all over the map without feeling like a chore. Story decisions only affect the tone of the conversation with the main NPC's, but dialogues options are always the same. There are plenty of side quests, but most of them lack impact. You get to enjoy 2 clearly different paths, either you save everyone or you kill everyone, anything in between is sort of lame. To conclude i would say the story is alright but nothing you will remember.
- The world: you get to run around London besieged by an epidemic, so everything looks really dark, gloomy and depressing, the music does a really good job at setting the mood, 2 minutes into the game and you already feel vampiristic vibe haha. The soundtracks are very enjoyable and right on par with the overall theme of the game. The map is small and very straight forward, after a couple missions you will know the map by heart. The world does not feel immerssive at all (aside from the music which is great), conversations with the NPC are rather awkward as well as looting everybody's homes right in front of their faces.
- Combat: it is terribly easy due to the fact that actions consume very little stamina and dodging overrides any other action so you do not get punished by attacking at the wrong time, making you virtually untouchable, aside from the fact that you are a magic wielding vampire fighting against humans with sticks. Regardless of how you choose to play you will always be overpowered. Even so, the combat feels smooth and it is by no means boring, you can have fun destroying people with your vampire skills.
As of 01/2021 i only experienced a couple of crashes, nothing game breaking.
If you can get it for under 10 eur it is definitely a good purchase as it will keep you entertained for at least 25-30 hours.
