This game lets you be delightfully BAD!

I don't understand the initial negativity towards the game. It really lets you roleplay it. Tons of interractions, each can play out differently depending on YOUR choices. Your choices alter your relationships with your party members and the game's factions. This is RPG in its purest form. So far I'm fresh in act II, having sunk 26 hours already. Some will say 'what a slow pace'. But it's just because I'm savoring every bit of the game. I try out different variants of how to handle every dialogue and judge the best course of action for me. It's fun to see how little details can lead to drastic changes. Plus I can bad as I want to be and still get away with it, because I don't break Kyros's law. Dropping a defeated enemy off a high tower? Yes, I've done it and I enjoyed every moment of it. Making people to confess their trespasses during a court hearing and then sentence them to death, all in the name of the law? Why sould I resist? Selling out all of my comrades so that I might shape the world as I will? I won't even blink an eye. Make my own hands stained by blood of my enemies? Sure - I'll gladly leave corpses in my wake. Long ago Michael Jackson sang "Because I' bad, I'm dad (...) And the whole world has to answer right now just to tell you once again, who's bad " The gameplay feels like a modyfied BG fighting style, but it's modern, more dynamic. The game runs on a 3D engine that feels like a reincarnation of Infinity Engine. After all Obsidian was founded by former Black Isles employees, so it adds that BG nostalgia. Even the interface seems as clunkly as in the original Baldur's Gate. Still Tyranny is not BG remastered - it has it's own mythology, it's own spell building system and it's network of little choices that determine your path. That, if Will you be the voice of reason, source of chaos, the sigil of law and order or a revolutionary, depends completely on the choices you make. And while doing so, you can be good at being very bad, and take fun in it.

In 5 to 10 years it should be a Classic!

This game woof...it took me 3 tries to get into it...started on a old pirated copy and bought it in reverance This game was Always in the back of my mind when considering what game to buy next so the tries 1. was a pirate copy i accedentaly went vendrien guard and quit not long after becouse i was against the entirety of Kyros's armies and i still liked the overlord so i stoped 2.second time was a new start with the same pirate copy and i went disfavoured and for one reason or another quit at iron hearth 3.and now I bough the game and gave it a true run and...i love this game this game is just...amazing graphics/artstyle -some whine its bad or that its not as good as other rps's for me its good and actually pleasent the models are a good but the faces and appearance is the roughest part about it and a big problem for me atleast is you CANT change the appearance of equiped gear...cant transmog m8 combat is REALLY fun -abilities are a blast and combo/companion abilities are damn good looking! -the magic system is just too damn fun as are combo/companion abilities and unfortunately too easy to use a fighter should not be able to do as good as a mage that easily and there should be limitations of some kind on magic -as it is its the best part of combat you can really be a god with a lightning weapon and a aura of flame launching earth spikes and cone of ice mf's and confusion that you see on old discusion threads about how the combat is ""confusing:"" or magic is ""hard to figure out"" !those people played only up to the first spire and dont know anything about the game so ignore that its basic if you sit for 5 seconds and work out how it works ! shame that there are only 4 interesting companion (verse, sirin, lantry and barik=on disfavoured path) beastwoman maybe is dont know and eb is a wasted slot in a cool world like teratus unfortunately its too easy hard should be the normal Conclusion:Amazing,Fun,Some bugs, dialog Choices are divine!

a complete package

i played tyranny before pillars of eternity. for a project that was underfunded, understaffed and released before it was finished. it sure feels like a more complete project than POE. the best parts of the game are: -the magic system blew me away. modular spells that can be customized and upgraded. even a hobo warrior could use a simple starting version of a spell, while high level mages can use spells that have like 10 different modifiers attached -your companions are all seriously interesting people and have great voicelines. my favorite was lantry -the world is nicely fleshed out, you see more of the backstory through dialogue than through some vague codex entry. dialogue also has quick links that explain concepts, so you never feel you have no clue what the chat is about. -the size of the game lends itself well for multiple playthroughs. at least 2 should be tried, loyalist and rebel, since whole maps play completely differently in these scenarios the worst parts of it are: -everything is smaller. the party size is player +3 companions. the maps are smaller. quests resolve faster (usually its just, visit one map, have one short fight and return to NPC) -for the purposes of the story, sometimes your dialogue options are too limited or the world makes no sense -a normal length act 1, a decent length act 2, and a comically fast act 3 with no sense of proper pacing

Dull as dishwater

First of all you start out massively underpowered, and undergeared for such a highranking badass that decides the fate of realms and has such extensive combat experience. The people around you, bow and tremble before your might, yet when you look at the character sheet there's nothing impressive. It's hard to imagine you've aided the conquest of an entire continent with just two weak spells. The combat is unimpactful, slow and dull. You'll be spending most of your time looking at the cooldown time until it's your turn to perform an attack. I thought maybe just mages have this issue, so I tried other classes and it's the same for every one.

Decent and fun. Not great.

Tyranny is... a good game. But if you came here after playing Pillars of Eternity (especially Deadfire), lower your expectation. While the lore and the world is interesting, it is not as rich and interesting as Eora. Nor are the characters and stories in it. Even levels leave... something to be desired I quite can't put my finger on. It just feels barebones in some way. Mind you there is A LOT of room below PoE so Tyranny is still a fun game to play. What I like is reputation system that forgoes morality scale and operates exclusively on the basis of your reputation with different factions and persons. Some artifacts in the game can level up too - but again it feels like poor cousin of Soulbound system from PoE. Caster classes can design their own spells with different intensities, AoE and effects which is honestly pretty awesome idea but personally I ended up using few optimal templates in the end. Fort building system is also nice, but again - it lacks depth. My biggest gripe with the game is that even though your character is supposed to be investigator, judge and executioner rolled up into one person, the game actually does not give you many opportunities to act as such. Sure, there is occasional disagreement you can make a ruling over, one or two short investigations but I am missing some proper detective quests to sink my teeth into.- something along the lines of "Inquisitor" Now, I know this reads like a negative review but it really is not. This is still pretty fun game and if you like RPGs you should grab it - especially if it's on discount. It's just that as I played it I could not shake the feeling that it is a shadow of much better game it could have been if it got more love, time and effort from devs.
