Game Description:
The Sinking City is an adventure and investigation game set in an open world inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft, the master of Horror. The half-submerged city of Oakmont is gripped by supernatural forces. You're a private investigator, and you have to uncover the truth of what has possessed the city… and the minds of its inhabitants.
Game Pillars:
An oppressive atmosphere and story inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft.
A vast open world that can be explored on foot, by boat, in a diving suit…
High replay value thanks to an open investigation system: each case can be solved in a number of ways, with different possible endings depending on your actions.
An arsenal of weapons from the 1920s with which to take on nightmarish creatures.
Manage your mental health to untangle the truth behind the madness.
Interesting and quite well done game, especially for those who like "film noir" and, of course, cthulhu.
It starts out very strong and interesting, but once you´ve solved the first case, and got used to the mechanics, you also start seeing it´s flaws. Flaws like massive re-use of assets (you´ll find the same cars, houses and objects over and over again), immersion-breaking flaws in world building (why is the building flooded outside, but not inside?), and the lack of consequences and world interaction in general.
While it´s an "open world", you can´t enter most of the buildings, and there is absolutely nothing to gain by roaming the streets!
But the "detective" and storytelling aspect is where it shines. It really creates a dense and foetid atmosphere.
Looks and plays a bit too dated to justify the 40+€ imho, but I got my almost 25h of fun out of it!
Love the writting and charecters, this is closest to lovecraft novels I experienced in video games. Gameplay has its lows -combat, overused same assets, not enough to do in open world city, crafting and skill points are meaningless in second half of the game - but the game loop is highly engaging - fights, detective work, exploration - I enjoyed every minut in this world and I know no other game that gave me similiar experience.
The game feels like it's halfway done, like it's in late alpha or early beta. There are a lot of issues with textures and sizes of textures in the environment, the monsters are not well thought out, the game seems to lack any method of combat that doesn't involve firearms (at least in the early stages once you are past the intro).
It's just dark, constantly foggy, with vast largely empty environments with little direction on where to go and how to proceed.
I didn't make it very far it to be fair. It's just not particularly engaging in the state that it is in.
