Game Description:
The Sinking City is an adventure and investigation game set in an open world inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft, the master of Horror. The half-submerged city of Oakmont is gripped by supernatural forces. You're a private investigator, and you have to uncover the truth of what has possessed the city… and the minds of its inhabitants.
Game Pillars:
An oppressive atmosphere and story inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft.
A vast open world that can be explored on foot, by boat, in a diving suit…
High replay value thanks to an open investigation system: each case can be solved in a number of ways, with different possible endings depending on your actions.
An arsenal of weapons from the 1920s with which to take on nightmarish creatures.
Manage your mental health to untangle the truth behind the madness.
Every fan of the Cthulhu universe would be glad to play the game. Even if the graphics may considered a bit obsolete, it is still a great piece of art.
I own the original and to my surprise This one appeared on my account.. RESPECT! I see this as the updated version and the one to play if you're planning on commencing a new game. In my case, I had to start all over because I was on a particular part in the old one (not that far) and this remaster doesn't work with original saves. But in the end it was all worth it, Let me elaborate.
Combat was balanced a lot, thank goodness because its this game's weakest point in my humble opinion. Enemies are no longer a mechanical frustration, they are challenging but not to a fault; balance. Gun play its still shotty (no pun intended) but workable.
Story its great, very intriguing however the ending was lackluster; won't spoil you but it reminded me of a cheap horror film.. Think "Dagon (2005)" It wasn't fulfilling but in a weird way I was glad I played the game.
The atmosphere is top notch in my experience, from the aesthetics to the vocal performance to the sound to the graphics. The game can indeed look astonishingly great with raytracing however I don't have the luxury to actually use that in a playable setting so I had to make do with what I have which is an RX6700XT and the performance (without raytracing or upscaling) was great in high settings at 1080p. This remaster is an improvement all around to the original specially since I wasn't all that happy with the OG's performance and frustrating balancing issue all around.
The thing that really shines through with this game is it's investigative mechanics.. Great great job! this game gives off Sherlock Holmes vibes since this was made by the same studio that brought out the last Sherlock games. This is where this game shines, couple that and H.P. Lovecraft's settings' atmosphere and this game is what you're looking at. I personally enjoyed it for what it was and while disappointed with the OG at first, it then grew on me and started playing until I actually started to enjoy it.
Anyways, with all the shenanigans put to rest, Looking forward to the Sinking City 2.
It took a little while to get into, the cut scenes are a bit heavy towards the beginning of the game. But once I was past the tutoral case, it became a really great open world detective game with horror elements.
It has a great clue-finding and research mechanic that took a little getting used to, but I found it quite satisfying once I got the hang of it.
Story was pretty good, not the game's strongest point, but it was interesting enough to keep things moving.
Combat was a little frantic at first, but it gets easier as you upgrade your skills and weapons. For an investigation type game, I felt it had a lot of combat, but it was fun.
Very engaging and solid game. The story, characters and 1920s setting simply draws you in along with it's Lovecraft theme. Solid investigation and exploration with clunky, but still manageable combat. The game is also a turning point for Frogwares in wanting to make games with action, open world setting, and horror elements, since both Sherlock Holmes Chapter One & The Awakened remake also carried elements from this game. The Sinking City is also getting a SEQUEL, which itself is a pleasant surprise, and it seems this is a series Frogwares will enjoy growing in the coming years.
Started my 1st game. Got to Will Hammond - he won't talk, no matter what I do. There's no reason he should be saying "my head" over and over again. It's the beginning of the game. This is crazy. I Load previous save - same thing. Unacceptable.
These bugs need to be fixed. If it's not a bug, then give a clue around it. You can't solve a case if you can't even talk to the NPC.
I found that the only way to fix this was to remove all saves and start over - doing the exact same run through. So I know it's a bug. But then other problems arose. Decided to reload and got back to Will Hammond - he won't talk. Nothing to get us moving at the beginning of this game but setbacks.
Hoping they fix this game! We shouldn't be stuck with no dialog or a way out.
Disappointed, Can't play a game this way.
