Game Description:
The Sinking City is an adventure and investigation game set in an open world inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft, the master of Horror. The half-submerged city of Oakmont is gripped by supernatural forces. You're a private investigator, and you have to uncover the truth of what has possessed the city… and the minds of its inhabitants.
Game Pillars:
An oppressive atmosphere and story inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft.
A vast open world that can be explored on foot, by boat, in a diving suit…
High replay value thanks to an open investigation system: each case can be solved in a number of ways, with different possible endings depending on your actions.
An arsenal of weapons from the 1920s with which to take on nightmarish creatures.
Manage your mental health to untangle the truth behind the madness.
Thank you for the free remaster. I love this game and played it 3 times. Everything about it, the story, the characters, the graphics, the length (it is huge) ....... One of the best games of its kind out there.
I have played a few hours and, I have to admit, the atmosphere is quite thick and oppressing.
The city is massive. Choke full of locations to explore.
Strange characters. Cycle day/night and objects to find.
Voice acting is really good and graphic is overly nice and fit the theme.
What I struggle to embrace is the overall gameplay. The whole world, while atmospheric, seems way too alien as well. People that look like fishes or apes.
Massive coral formations grown everywhere.
The whole city is filled with giant sharks and squids left rotting on the ground.
Monsters teleports on your back.
Your character movement is sloooow. Climbing is clunky.
The Mindspace mini game, where you associate cases clues, I still do not understand how works and feels ... Weird.
The supernatural view is meh... Perhaps not needed.
Collecting evidence and identify specific clues on them, to progress cases, is ok. But a couple of times I think was not obvious how to progress. I.e. what actions take with the item.
Some door do not open until you find all clues. Sometimes 2 meters from the door that, magically, now can be opened because you watched some supernatural cutscene.
Moving by boat in the city is nice but boring, after a while.
Even many years past release this game holds up very well in the graphics dept. I've barely made it past the intro zone and I'm already in awe of the scope and amount of custom artwork that went into this game. Something about this game always had a unique feel to it that kept it on my radar and I'm stoked I finally have time to play it. Everything feels high quality and well designed. My only complaint would be that some controls and quirks are hard to figure out at first due to the lack of a full tutorial. Can't wait to get further in though I'm already kinda scared of how much time I might dump into it!
It took a little while to get into, the cut scenes are a bit heavy towards the beginning of the game. But once I was past the tutoral case, it became a really great open world detective game with horror elements.
It has a great clue-finding and research mechanic that took a little getting used to, but I found it quite satisfying once I got the hang of it.
Story was pretty good, not the game's strongest point, but it was interesting enough to keep things moving.
Combat was a little frantic at first, but it gets easier as you upgrade your skills and weapons. For an investigation type game, I felt it had a lot of combat, but it was fun.
Very engaging and solid game. The story, characters and 1920s setting simply draws you in along with it's Lovecraft theme. Solid investigation and exploration with clunky, but still manageable combat. The game is also a turning point for Frogwares in wanting to make games with action, open world setting, and horror elements, since both Sherlock Holmes Chapter One & The Awakened remake also carried elements from this game. The Sinking City is also getting a SEQUEL, which itself is a pleasant surprise, and it seems this is a series Frogwares will enjoy growing in the coming years.
