In Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, the player journeys from a doomed Arkham into the depths of the Abyss. Create your own character based on 1920's archetypes and carve a path through a broken and mysterious world.
Your desperate battle against forces beyond comprehension will haunt you until the end. Physical combat will be challenging, spellcasting will have dire consequences, and your sanity will be strained to the breaking point by unknown abominations. Sometimes the best solution will be to flee what lurks beyond the threshold.
Features:
A hand drawn 2D world reflecting Lovecraft's themes of cosmic horror and dread.
Enemies, environments and storylines inspired by Lovecraft’s iconic original works. Take part in quests inspired by your favorite stories and see them play out according to your own decisions and role-playing style.
Choose from 8 main character Archetypes, each with its own origin backstory and specialties.
A host of weird companions will accompany you on your ill-starred journey: the lonely, antediluvian 'Outsider', a fallen soldier of the Great War reanimated by Herbert West. Recruit these and other outlandish beings to your crew.
Your character's Sanity and mental state will influence dialogue options. Mental illness comes with advantages as well as hindrances. Sometimes it pays to be mad in a world gone mad!
Stygian's Belief System determines how your characters cope with the warped reality of the new Arkham, as well as the rate at which they regenerate lost Sanity. Belief Systems also offer unique dialogue options, expanding the breadth of role-playing possibilities.
A new kind of spell system which sometimes takes more than it gives. Being a master of the occult is not as simple as flinging colored missiles from your fingertips. The black magic of Stygian is potent but may cost you your mind, your health, and possibly even much more.
Strategic, turn-based combat from a 2D perspective, similar to the classic Heroes of Might and Magic games.
The struggle in Stygian is not to save the world, for that battle is lost already. Pursue your own goals in these end times: salvation, vendetta, or perhaps something darker.
I really like this game. It's really good and very unique. Combat is a bit annoying, but everything else is very well done.
The only problem, is that this game have bugs. Aside from a 1000+ small bugs, there's many major game-breaking bugs that to this day haven't been fixed.
It's been exactly 1 month since the release of the game, and not a single patch have been released. Only promises from the devs that they will fix the game at some point in the future.
So... I absolutely DON'T recommend this game in it's current state, it's a waste of time and money. Wait for the devs to fix the bugs first!
i haven't played but maybe an hour so far.. but i already am loving everything about this game! the way it looks and plays are amazing! i love how many different ways you can customize your character and that it actually changes the things you can do and say!!!! There are so so so may different things you can be in this world... ( i do find the portrait of female characters lacking though) … although i haven't tried a different career other than Occult Detective under the Detective section … maybe they have different ones, idk … i do like the UI and the way things are laid out … it can be overwhelming at first, but, if you read and go over everything... this game becomes so much fun!
The game has GREAT aesthetic and beautiful art direction, an exciting story, and compelling characters as well.
But ultimately, it has a lot of bugs, even game-breaking ones (for example, sometimes the game might crash right after a plot-driven fight, which means to need to do that all over again), and it is not a finished game, in any sense of the word (The game ends with at the very least, 2 main quests "to be continued" in a hypothetical sequel).
I had high hopes for the game (I backed it on KS years ago), and while I do see a lot of potential in a future sequel (with enough time and funds), I feel this game is a missed opportunity.
I love the game the positives is like everybody is saying on other reviews, but for me at least i can't finish the game, everytime some bug breaking happen, i try to reload the game or load some old file but the bug occour at expesific point and i can't process, i'm on my third run btw...is really frustrating
This is, hands down the only Lovecraftian rpg out there which plays like an oldschool crpg, good sides and bad. But you won't go mad, you'll just fizzle out of enthusiasm after too many frustrations. I won't repeat what has already been said, yes the writting and story are great, but the combat is unresponsive and buggy, it's just completely frustrating.
Example 1: You're gonna win the battle, you only need to hit this enemy who is standing on top of a dead enemy. You click on the enemy, but your character uses his action points to take items off the body instead of attacking, you died.
Example 2: You try to click on smb, everybody is on a hex, but clicking on the hex has no corelation with the target, the target is some weird hit box based on the flash animated character standing on the hex under your target. You missed, you died.
Example 3: There is a front and rear attacks mechanic, but you can't change where your character is facing...why... you got backstabbed?
Example 4: You just restarted the combat for the 3 time because of that last mechanic stupidity, you think to yourself, do these people ever play video games? Why not just play HOMM 3 instead and read Lovecraftian books?
But honestly, it's quite unique, hand drawn and everything, tons of passion went into the making, but at a certain point somebody on top started making stupid decisions, and everybody on the team was either too stoned or couldn't bother to tell him it ain't fun.
