In Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, the player journeys from a doomed Arkham into the depths of the Abyss. Create your own character based on 1920's archetypes and carve a path through a broken and mysterious world.
Your desperate battle against forces beyond comprehension will haunt you until the end. Physical combat will be challenging, spellcasting will have dire consequences, and your sanity will be strained to the breaking point by unknown abominations. Sometimes the best solution will be to flee what lurks beyond the threshold.
Features:
A hand drawn 2D world reflecting Lovecraft's themes of cosmic horror and dread.
Enemies, environments and storylines inspired by Lovecraft’s iconic original works. Take part in quests inspired by your favorite stories and see them play out according to your own decisions and role-playing style.
Choose from 8 main character Archetypes, each with its own origin backstory and specialties.
A host of weird companions will accompany you on your ill-starred journey: the lonely, antediluvian 'Outsider', a fallen soldier of the Great War reanimated by Herbert West. Recruit these and other outlandish beings to your crew.
Your character's Sanity and mental state will influence dialogue options. Mental illness comes with advantages as well as hindrances. Sometimes it pays to be mad in a world gone mad!
Stygian's Belief System determines how your characters cope with the warped reality of the new Arkham, as well as the rate at which they regenerate lost Sanity. Belief Systems also offer unique dialogue options, expanding the breadth of role-playing possibilities.
A new kind of spell system which sometimes takes more than it gives. Being a master of the occult is not as simple as flinging colored missiles from your fingertips. The black magic of Stygian is potent but may cost you your mind, your health, and possibly even much more.
Strategic, turn-based combat from a 2D perspective, similar to the classic Heroes of Might and Magic games.
The struggle in Stygian is not to save the world, for that battle is lost already. Pursue your own goals in these end times: salvation, vendetta, or perhaps something darker.
Story and game itself is for 4 or even more, but there is too many bug currently that sometimes really made me want to quit and forget this game. Also I have a feeling of some missing content or guidance.
If I knew I would not buy this game until they fix all issues, also suggest every potential buyer to wait some time for fixes.
Game was fantastic until the end. But unfortunately there is no end. The devs stated the odd ending was on purpose. I'm sorry but the game was rushed and unfinished. Why lie? But I hope they redeem themselves with a proper ending to justify my $30 dollars. You can save face devs just delete the entire ending and do it right.
I haven't played through the game yet.
I used the offline installer because I found the achievement notifications of gog galaxy irritating and distracting.
The atmosphere and the world of the game is like a mash-up of most of Lovecraft's most iconic works: Not just Chutulhu mythos, you get reanmators and witchcraft too!
Unfortunately I've encountered two bugs:
1. Often after loading an area or a save, keyboard shortcuts don't work until I move my character.
2. Some times the UI stops printing information: I got "experience gained: N/A" a few times.
These minor bugs don't kill the game but they do reduce the immersiveness.
Bug-free, the game would be 5/5
Please don't do it. What you can play is a ton of fun. But inevitably the game will crash and brick your saves or you will run into a game-breaking bug, etc. You think to yourself - no, that won't happen to me! I'll be lucky! No, you are a mere mortal and you won't be lucky. The very game itself is an eldritch horror, captivating but destructive and merciless.
The game seemed promising when I first heard about it, but I was sadly disappointed by the released product. The best part is the dialogue with other characters, general atmosphere and the music. All the textual content is well written and interesting to read. The music is eerie and fits the game perfectly.
The actual gameplay is maddening. There are plenty of bugs, both cosmetic and those that affect the gameplay. For example, a 3440x1440 display resolution works, but some graphical items are not adjusted for it. Your menu might stop working, so you can't access the character sheet, inventory or even the pause menu. Some mechanics are not explained well enough or information is hidden from the player. Like exhaustion or hunger statuses, which will just appear on the character without any exhaustion or hunger bar giving you a chance to prepare. There are too many things like this to make playing enjoyable.
