Old school shooter, with nice graphics.

I feel an old school pleasure with this game, and it's what i wanted the most. I like modern shooters (300 hours on Battlefield 3 in 6 months, a lot of ArmA 3, etc...) but I wanted to have this particular feeling we had before. Mission accomplished ! The game is using Unreal Engine, so graphics are great, and the game is fast ! I like the level design with a lot of secret places and verticality. The atmosphere is great too, with a lot of humor and a little b-movie side. I can't play the multiplayer part yet, so I will not speak about it in this little review. So I will conclude with a little sentence : if you enjoyed ROTT, the original one, get the 2013 version, you'll love it !

Blast from the past

Does the original justice! Tons of guns, tons of enemies, fast-paced soundtrack - more than enough to stand out from the crowd of clunky cover-based shooters that are so common nowadays. Most levels have the flow of a very classic shooter where getting through and getting out while mowing down the resistance is the point, yet the boss levels fall short. Too much exposure, too few elements for evading and taking them down in more ways than one. Difficulty will keep you in the sweet spot between boredom and frustration, with very few exceptions; and it seems that the most common grievance (too few autosaves) has been solved in the update with the addition of the Quicksave feature. Graphics are on par with any Unreal Engine 3 release, music is rocking with updated versions of the original tunes and plenty of easter eggs and secrets to be found! If you want a game where you twitch first and ask questions later, this one's for you!

Like a mediocre 90s shooter.

I'm the ostensible target market for this game, Unreal Tournament 2004 is still one of my favourite shooters, and I still enjoy playing Doom Shareware once in a while. Rise of the Triad doesn't do anything for me. There were plenty of shooters in the 90s that weren't good, that didn't stack up with the best of them, and this feels like one of them, rather than the good ones we remember.
