Bad old times

This games plays and feels just like the kind of games I used to play as a kind, EXACTLY like them! It comes with all the flaws of games from the 80. You walk around a corner and the AI will see you as soon as 1 pixel intersects with the AI's vision cone. So they know exactly where you are while you are still looking for the guy shooting at you. The enemy is also properly camouflaged and really hard to see but this is supposed to be a game and not a simulation. So you tend to get shot before you even know where most of the enemies are. Feel free to pirate ONE copy because I will not be playing the game I purchased. Playing this game is a horrible experience because the devs did not learn a single lesson from past games. Rating -10 stars

An almost perfect reboot.

The most concise way to explain this game, is that it is to the original Rise of the Triad, what Return to Castle Wolfenstein was to Wolfenstein 3D. The developers did a marvelous job of presenting a case of "Where's what you get, if the source material was made with today's technology!" That said, this game does have some annoyances. Despite being able to really crank up the graphics detail on older video cards like my GT 220, and run blazingly fast, the game has stuttering and slowdown in a completely unexpected area, the cutscenes, which are just pre-rendered flybys of the levels, and in the motion comic cutscenes. These are not resource taxing, as they're just movie files. So it's a bit confusing. My other issue are the load times which can be very VERY long at times.

This is not a finished product

The core of the game is good, but everything else is way too rough around the edges. There are lots of bugs, from getting stuck in props, weapons disappearing from your inventory upon reloading a save, enemies coming back from the dead... the list goes on. There's an evident lack of polish here, especially with the level design. Tt feels very amateur sometimes (floating elements, NPC standing still with their arms spread left and right, like the animators couldn't be bothered, scripts that can get you stuck if you don't do as the designers intended...). Don't get me wrong the game can be fun but you'll have to put up with some very annoying issues.

Even worse than the original

This game consists of three kinds of things: those from the original, those from 90s, and those from modern games. It looks like they picked up them in a wrong way. Things from the original: gore (fun), flying pads (fun), lots of hazards (fun, but not so much), Nazi-looking enemies (like I care), exchangeable 4th weapon (but if you pick another one of the same type, the one you had simply disappears, unlike the original), the plot and the whole atmosphere. Things from 90s: colored keys... and that's about it. Modern things: nice graphics (good) and linearity (awful). Now, the original wasn't particularly good and it was outdated. This game is even worse. It can be fun to play at first, but then it gets repetitive, and on top of that, there is a lot of jumping and running "puzzles" filled with flamethrowers, slicers, crushers and whatnot, and that makes it not only repetitive but also frustrating. What makes me absolutely sick is the linearity. It doesn't feel like you're playing the game, like in 90s, but rather that you're completing it stage-by-stage. I've played to episode 2 so far and haven't seen a single maze which would make me feel free to roam. This game doesn't totally suck, as there are bloody fights, awesome music and lots of fun involved, but it is also repetitive, frustrating, and doesn't feel nostalgic at all after you get used to all that flying pads and other familiar stuff. Not worth buying unless you don't give a damn about linearity and are a real fan of the original.
