United States, 1830: ‘The New World’ is in its ascendancy. Industry is booming, and the race is on to establish the most dominant and powerful rail empire in all of North America. It’s time to outthink and outmaneuver your competitors as you lead your company into the 20th century!
In Railway Empire, you will create an elaborate and wide-ranging rail network, purchase over 40 different trains modelled in extraordinary detail, and buy or build railway stations, maintenance buildings, factories and tourist attractions to keep your travel network ahead of the competition. You’ll also need to hire and manage your workforce if you want to ensure an efficient train service, whilst also develop over 300 technologies ranging from mechanical improvements to the trains themselves to workplace infrastructures and advanced amenities as you progress through five eras of technological innovations.
However, you can’t just build and research your way to the top – the competition never sleeps, and to keep your business on track you’ll have to survive against up to three rival tycoons. To get to the top you may have to resort to more cutthroat tactics as you attack and sabotage your opponents through raids and industrial espionage.
Exploit the economic opportunities of the United States in an extensive campaign, working your way step by step from coast to coast across this great continent.
Lead your Railway Empire to success by establishing a comprehensive rail network and optimizing transportation of passengers and goods.
Master challenges and objectives through a range of scenarios, or create your perfect railway network in construction mode without any financial pressure.
Over 40 historically accurate locomotives and more than 30 different wagons can be acquired over the course of the game, and must be put to use in the best way in order to take advantage of their strengths and weaknesses.
Invest in over 300 new technologies across five different eras to progress and maximize the potential of your rail network.
Compete with up to three rival companies, and even sabotage their efforts with the use of bandits and spies.
The looks okay and it has interesting mechanics but it has two major problems:
1. The tutorial is kindof confusing, my first hour in the game was pretty uncomfortable.
2. The controls, the building - very clunky..
Also the interface is not so great, they need a UI expert to show them how to build a decent one..
Sometimes you can see weird bugs in stations when you are riding the train, like graphical glitches with people drowning..
Not worth more than 10 euros in my opinion.
This game is interesting in a way, but what you notice as you play for awhile is that the AI cheats. If you start to do better in the game, the AI will up the ante and artificially suddenly makes the game harder, and it makes it harder by refusing to do what it's supposed to do. I swear it's true. I played "The South" scenario six times and failed every time because that gangster idiot in the game kept buying my company. Finally, I took out bonds and built quickly, and took over the game very fast, but now, suddenly, the game wouldn't let me achieve a population of 60,000 in Kansas City by the end of 1892, which is your first requirement in order to continue playing. All six times previously, I easily got Kansas City to 60,000. Suddenly, now, when I'm whipping ass, the approval rate in Kansas City stays at 45%, no matter what I did, and the population shrank. I didn't do anything differently, but all of sudden my trains are breaking down, they ignore stop signals and just stop for no reason, and they all act like they're clueless. Also, tell me why a train going into a station with FOUR TRACKS has to wait forever until the single train parked in the station leaves. It's just so stupid. If things had actually worked this way in early America, we never would have grown past a third world country.
The game looks good graphically at first sight and does not overwhelm the player with too many options.
After some playing time, however, irreparable errors occur. Correctly connected, upgraded stations are no longer found by the trains. All signals removed and reinstalled, but connections are not possible. First one station is affected, then two, three and so on.
That's annoying and the fun of playing doesn't come anymore. Even after a new start, you don't know when the error will come back.
My main problem with this game is city growth, after connecting every resource any particular city needs growth stays the same or in some cases even goes down this has been the most frustrating part for me everything is set up and transporting but still no growth. I would avoid buying this game until some of the clearly game breaking issues are fixed.
I'm not even going to get into the very simplistic and lazy AI that have over 100 trains on a single track meanwhile I have less than 20 on my whole network.
Hopefully they can resolve some of these things as this game has great potential, we will see.
The in game experience :- The game concept is brilliant, the graphics excellent but... It is plain and simply buggy and extremely hard to achieve goals. In normal mode it is extremely difficult to keep on top of tasks and every mode I have played I fail. If the developers are listening we badly need some fixes.
1. there needs an easy play besides the "normal and hard"
2. I should have listed this first. Definitely needs an upgrade to iron out the task and layout editing bugs.
3. Tasks need to be spaced out more (time) so one can relax and enjoy the game a bit more (less pressure more relaxation and more fun).
Don't get me wrong, the game is brilliant and can be quite enjoyable, just needs fixes so one can enjoy instead of running the brain along with the train at 100 MPH, I feel like I need medication to relax after a session. The only reason I rated 3 stars is due to in game pressure, The game could be an absolute 5 star winner with an appropriate upgrade.
I play every night since release, cheers Pete
