Description
United States, 1830: ‘The New World’ is in its ascendancy. Industry is booming, and the race is on to establish the most dominant and powerful rail empire in all of North America. It’s time to outthink and outmaneuver your competitors as you lead your company into the 20th century!

In Railway Empire, you will create an elaborate and wide-ranging rail network, purchase over 40 different trains modelled in extraordinary detail, and buy or build railway stations, maintenance buildings, factories and tourist attractions to keep your travel network ahead of the competition. You’ll also need to hire and manage your workforce if you want to ensure an efficient train service, whilst also develop over 300 technologies ranging from mechanical improvements to the trains themselves to workplace infrastructures and advanced amenities as you progress through five eras of technological innovations.

However, you can’t just build and research your way to the top – the competition never sleeps, and to keep your business on track you’ll have to survive against up to three rival tycoons. To get to the top you may have to resort to more cutthroat tactics as you attack and sabotage your opponents through raids and industrial espionage.
  • Exploit the economic opportunities of the United States in an extensive campaign, working your way step by step from coast to coast across this great continent.
  • Lead your Railway Empire to success by establishing a comprehensive rail network and optimizing transportation of passengers and goods.
  • Master challenges and objectives through a range of scenarios, or create your perfect railway network in construction mode without any financial pressure.
  • Over 40 historically accurate locomotives and more than 30 different wagons can be acquired over the course of the game, and must be put to use in the best way in order to take advantage of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Invest in over 300 new technologies across five different eras to progress and maximize the potential of your rail network.
  • Compete with up to three rival companies, and even sabotage their efforts with the use of bandits and spies.

I'm hooked on this game

I bought this game a few years ago and I only get a chance to play games occassionally. In the past 2 months I have been playing this every day (because I got tired of Red Dead Online). I also play this game on my XBOX One after I got used to how it worked using a controller, for times when I can't be bothered to turn on my desktop PC. However now that this games development is complete this game is really a vast improvement to how it was when first released in 2018. A lot of the other reviews on here are from 2018 when the game still had updates and DLC's to be added. In 2019 and 2020 this game had a number of updates with suggestions from the community. For people who say it is too easy, there are many more options regarding increasing the difficulty of scenarios and free mode. I'm a long time gamer and have played all the Railrod Tycoon games and the original Transport Tycoon and whilst this game is not exactly the same as those I still enjoy it immensely. Plus I love doing the first person view travelling on the train.

Better after further development

I bought this game during a spring sale after it had been out for a little over a year. Many of the issues from the early reviews of the game have been addressed. There is a mode where the AI follows the same rules that you do. (Admittedly, there's about a 50% chance that their network will implode at some point, so I opt to let them cheat.) As far as players that cannot figure out how to maintain their own networks, I'm not sure what to say. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is tic tac toe and 10 is XCOM2, this game is like a 5. Some of the playabilty features of the various DLC have made their way into the base game. Frankly, I don't think I would be willing to play without automatic switching stations, and am amazed that anyone did. I'm all for a little micro as part of the player agency experience, but I don't enjoy games that become jobs! The UI is dated. It looks retro, which might be a deliberate homage to its predecessors, but did it really need to be as inconvenient as a 1990s UI? Protip: You can pan around the map with the mouse by clicking on the minimap. But, yeah, who doesn't have edge scroll these days? Again with the 1990s UI theme. tl;dr if you like watching numbers grow, buy this game.

Nice Game, Flawed Controls

I've kept my eye on this game for some time, but £34 is way out of my spending limit so I purchased while it was on offer. It seems a more detailed version of Sid Meier's Railroads!, which IMO was a flawed game and not as good as the old RR Tycoon games. RW seems to have a lot more depth and scale. My biggest complaint with Railway Empire is the control system; using WASD to move around actally buffers keystrokes - hold a key for longer than half a second or so and the game sweeps away across the map for many seconds afterwards. This makes it extremely difficult to navigate. Another review said the controls are "fine" - they are absolutely not fine and not worthy of the premium price they are asking. Placing signals is also an excercise in frustration, as mouse input is repeatedly ingored. A much better UI is needed for this. I'm still evaluating the game but I'm minded to get a refund until the shockingly bad controls are corrected.

great game

I do not write reviews very often, but when i saw here some bad comments on the game, i felt the need to write here one. This game is great!! When you love trains, want to learn something about economy, and you have a lot of free time, this is the game. I must admit, the learning curve is somewhat steep, but when you take the time to see some videos (for example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShcR4XmL0Yg), where they explain how to lay tracks, how to make a strategy plan and you get used to the controls you get, this game is very addictive. When i see one of thee bad reviews, where they say, that the train is not leaving the station, and he or she doesnt know why, one of the reasons could be that the destination/city of the train doesnt need the goods you want to ship with the train. Simply said, when you want to ship beer to chicago, and chicago has already their own brewery that makes beer, there is no need to ship beer to chicago, so the train will not leave the station. Yes, you have to know this ;) Have a lot of fun.

Fun to play

this game is fun to play and waste away the hours on a rainy or snowy day. similar to railroad tycoon. no manual to help, have to browse around by trial and error to figure things out. the STOCK MARKET needs work, if you can finish a scenario with out the AI competitors buying you out, you have a option to finish the term allotted, with only a few months left the competitors always buy you out and game ends. other than a few little bugs still fun to play. if it wasnt for the bad stock market i would give this sim/tycoon game a 5 star.
