Description
United States, 1830: ‘The New World’ is in its ascendancy. Industry is booming, and the race is on to establish the most dominant and powerful rail empire in all of North America. It’s time to outthink and outmaneuver your competitors as you lead your company into the 20th century!

In Railway Empire, you will create an elaborate and wide-ranging rail network, purchase over 40 different trains modelled in extraordinary detail, and buy or build railway stations, maintenance buildings, factories and tourist attractions to keep your travel network ahead of the competition. You’ll also need to hire and manage your workforce if you want to ensure an efficient train service, whilst also develop over 300 technologies ranging from mechanical improvements to the trains themselves to workplace infrastructures and advanced amenities as you progress through five eras of technological innovations.

However, you can’t just build and research your way to the top – the competition never sleeps, and to keep your business on track you’ll have to survive against up to three rival tycoons. To get to the top you may have to resort to more cutthroat tactics as you attack and sabotage your opponents through raids and industrial espionage.
  • Exploit the economic opportunities of the United States in an extensive campaign, working your way step by step from coast to coast across this great continent.
  • Lead your Railway Empire to success by establishing a comprehensive rail network and optimizing transportation of passengers and goods.
  • Master challenges and objectives through a range of scenarios, or create your perfect railway network in construction mode without any financial pressure.
  • Over 40 historically accurate locomotives and more than 30 different wagons can be acquired over the course of the game, and must be put to use in the best way in order to take advantage of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Invest in over 300 new technologies across five different eras to progress and maximize the potential of your rail network.
  • Compete with up to three rival companies, and even sabotage their efforts with the use of bandits and spies.

Railway Empire

Beautiful graphics. Good economy and stock market models which remind me of Railroad Tycoon 3. AI takes no prisoners but can be beaten on the stock market. Plenty of challenge and plenty of subtlety in the scenarios offered. Maps only for the USA at present---European/British DLC urgently please!. The drop down Train info menu becomes unwieldy when dozens of trains are in play, better search and sorting options would help but my preferred option would be to replace the train menu with a drop down Transport Line menu and with the trains grouped under the transport line on which they run. It would be nice if the transport lines and the trains could be separately named. No problems for me with the rest of the interface the financial information in particular is detailed and easily accessible. Overall this game is a keeper. I have thirty or so hours on the clock with it and I do not regret spending the money. I am, however, a sucker for these simulation games.

The new King of Railroad Tycooning

So you are a gaming veteran needing your Railroad Tycoon Fix? Played Railroad Tycoon 2 and 3 to death? You thing Railroad Tycoon 2 and 3 really didn't aged so well? Look no further then Railway Empire! This game has (almost) everything you want and expect from an new Railroad Tycoon. Great graphics, very nice trains, smart track building, increased depth en just that addiction to keep playing and just watch your trains and network keep rolling. The almost part is that this game has his focus on the new world, America. Which is understandeble for the production costs and the size of the developer. But on the positive side.. this means more room for new content and a possible sequel, bring on Europe and the World! I am very glad I bought this game, even at full price. So if you are a Raiload Tycoon fan, then support this great game and who knows where it will end! Maybe even Fixaxis will wake up and we get Railroad Tycoon 4? We can only dream... but until that day we have Railway Empire... hail to the new King!

I'm hooked on this game

I bought this game a few years ago and I only get a chance to play games occassionally. In the past 2 months I have been playing this every day (because I got tired of Red Dead Online). I also play this game on my XBOX One after I got used to how it worked using a controller, for times when I can't be bothered to turn on my desktop PC. However now that this games development is complete this game is really a vast improvement to how it was when first released in 2018. A lot of the other reviews on here are from 2018 when the game still had updates and DLC's to be added. In 2019 and 2020 this game had a number of updates with suggestions from the community. For people who say it is too easy, there are many more options regarding increasing the difficulty of scenarios and free mode. I'm a long time gamer and have played all the Railrod Tycoon games and the original Transport Tycoon and whilst this game is not exactly the same as those I still enjoy it immensely. Plus I love doing the first person view travelling on the train.

Improvements needed... i think.

I'm in trouble, because i did not played in PC for about a decade. But i have several thing that i have to mention: - The most problematic thing that i cannot move the map with my mouse. In most of the strategy games i click a left mouse button, and "grab" the map, and can drag where i would like to. In this case, i have to use the AWSD buttons. - I got a task to connect railway stations in X and Y Cities, but there were no signs of the destination city. A complex map where you can see all the tasks wold be great. Or the playing area... In the beginning, the tutorial has the "light" effect for example at the signs. The tasks could be similar. -You have to think twice how and where you build your station, because of the terrain. -Managing rails also a problem. In many cases, i have to build and demolish a track because merged to the wrong lane... and there are no trespass. - The trains are very special... They can rum ~30km or miles per hour, and a trip from one town to another takes 1-2 days, however the disance between these cities just about 50-100kms. :) interesting. - The signals... it is frustrating. Why are these are in the game? - Sometimes a train has a triangle on it, and says one item is missing, so it is slow. But you cannot recognise whats wrong... a little help would be nice. Or it can show what is missing/wrong. - The newspapers are annoying. They appear at the worst times. I think there are positive things also, for instance, the game runs on my machine. I have a 5 years old VGA. The graphic detali, and the elements of the map are coorectly made. You can zoom almost you can see the train engineer's eye. The strategy is not just build a train company, but you should manage cities with industry, you can build sights to lure passengers, You could improve your trains by adding staff on it, and you have to manage staff members. They cannot go on well sometimes with each other. Afterall, i like this game :) Maybe in the future there will be a revamped version!

Better after further development

I bought this game during a spring sale after it had been out for a little over a year. Many of the issues from the early reviews of the game have been addressed. There is a mode where the AI follows the same rules that you do. (Admittedly, there's about a 50% chance that their network will implode at some point, so I opt to let them cheat.) As far as players that cannot figure out how to maintain their own networks, I'm not sure what to say. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is tic tac toe and 10 is XCOM2, this game is like a 5. Some of the playabilty features of the various DLC have made their way into the base game. Frankly, I don't think I would be willing to play without automatic switching stations, and am amazed that anyone did. I'm all for a little micro as part of the player agency experience, but I don't enjoy games that become jobs! The UI is dated. It looks retro, which might be a deliberate homage to its predecessors, but did it really need to be as inconvenient as a 1990s UI? Protip: You can pan around the map with the mouse by clicking on the minimap. But, yeah, who doesn't have edge scroll these days? Again with the 1990s UI theme. tl;dr if you like watching numbers grow, buy this game.
