Project Warlock is a first person shooter that fans of Doom, Hexen and Wolfenstein cannot miss. It serves you an exploding cocktail of bullets, spells and monsters. In Project Warlock you battle through 60 levels of non stop action packed with bloodthirsty enemies and challenging bosses. The game offers not just firepower, but perk-based character development, weapon upgrades and unlockable spells system. This high-quality independent gem is priced to appeal to fans of polished indie titles and seekers of classic fps experience alike.
Back in April 2018 hundreds of gamers had a chance to experience an early build of Project Warlock and gave their enthusiastic feedback. The following six months the Buckshot team, with it’s showrunner Jakub Cislo, spent on polishing the game to bring you the most complete and satisfying experience. The end result is something you can check for yourself.
I dislike the perks and stuff but even ignoring and choosing random stuff works out :D
The game is really good for an indy title. It's not a Hexen but at this price, a true gem and must have played for all retro gamers.
If you are looking for a doom clone, this is it. The ONLY issue I have had is that the game is very, very, VERY visually dark, and hard to see sometimes. Other than that, absolute 10/10. Except for the darn sewer level >:(((.
So this is a pretty good little callback to retro shooters and is pretty fun. Chances are if you think you'll like this game you probably will like it, and I'd say it's worth the relatively cheap price. I also really enjoy the graphics filters in this, and I would say the definitive way to play is to turn on the retro filter and set pixels to at least 2x - don't forget to turn off Y-axis aiming. Some people may say there's no point to play this when there are Doom mods to capture the retro feel for free, but I think the fantastic sprite work and unique style are worth the price. (I will say if you truly want a modern recreation of the original Doom style, look into a Doom mod called REKKR).
With all that said, though, I do have some nags with the game:
- The choice to use a lives system and not have manual saves is weird to me. I've never played a retro shooter without quicksaves, but I've beaten the first world without having too much trouble so far.
-It took me a while to notice but the level design is much closer to Wolfenstein than Doom. There's no verticality and the floor layouts look like they were drawn on grid paper. Not inherently a bad thing but strikes me as odd.
-The trailer led me to believe that the protagonist would be a Lo Wang/Douk type with quippy one-liners during gameplay, but he's actually completely silent as far as I can tell, which is a slight disappointment.
This game is perfect for short gameplay sessions. Has intense, Wolfenstein 3D - like action and ideal length of levels - enough to get your fun, not enough to get bored or frustrated. Really good art, smooth flowing level design (all flat mazes like in Wolf, but you never get lost). Getting XP and character stats and weapons upgrading between levels successfully prevents rage-quitting if enemies prove too hard. After all you are always a little bit more powerful every next time you try. Launches and loads up under a minute, which is very, very important, if you play in 10 minute sessions.
The only one con is over the top head bobbing. Can cause nausea while playing in full screen, we could use an option to turn it off.
