Project Warlock is a first person shooter that fans of Doom, Hexen and Wolfenstein cannot miss. It serves you an exploding cocktail of bullets, spells and monsters. In Project Warlock you battle through 60 levels of non stop action packed with bloodthirsty enemies and challenging bosses. The game offers not just firepower, but perk-based character development, weapon upgrades and unlockable spells system. This high-quality independent gem is priced to appeal to fans of polished indie titles and seekers of classic fps experience alike.
Back in April 2018 hundreds of gamers had a chance to experience an early build of Project Warlock and gave their enthusiastic feedback. The following six months the Buckshot team, with it’s showrunner Jakub Cislo, spent on polishing the game to bring you the most complete and satisfying experience. The end result is something you can check for yourself.
- Capped 60fps frame rate
- Viewbob cannot be turn off
- No customizable keybinds for weapon slots
- No wide FOV (although this one is kind of a part of the level design)
If these issues get worked on, this is a total no brainer for people who want a retro arena single player with great graphics and sounds, intentionally simple level design and satisfying shooting. The retro filters are an amazing touch.
But the magic is a bit of a dud... Hence 4/5.
I saw this game on RockPaperShotgun and had to have it. Simple fast paced FPS games are my sort of thing. The chunky pixel art and filters that can be applied help with the retro appeal if that is your thing. Personally, I prefer to focus on the game play - I have worked my way through the first 2 episodes and about a a quarter of the way through the 3rd.
Perhaps it is unfair of me to slam the spells in the game as I haven't played it all the way to the end, yet. However, as of yet, I have not felt the need to spend upgrade points on the spells. I felt these points were better spent on the guns - which are mighty fun and satisfying. I guess the game might ramp up as it progresses and maybe then the spells start to come into their own. We'll see.
The axe is a brutal and fun weapon. With the right character build it seems entirely possible to mostly use this weapon through most of the game. I know I've certainly used it a lot and I've tried to keep my character flexible. Now, I say character build as if the RPG element is quite built up... it isn't. But then again, I am happy it isn't. It's just enough to not distract from the action but also enough to make it enjoyable rather than a throw away bolt on that many small games seem to do.
On a sidenote, the music in the game is a bit of a mixed bag. More often than not, I find myself enjoying the music. From time to time, I find myself trying to get past the level in hope that the music changes in the next level. With a a retro shooter, the music tends to be in your face. But having said that, some of the tracks have been really good. I know, turn down the music volume... but I really don't think that is how this game is meant to be played.
In summary, this game is well worth the money if you enjoy this type of FPS. That is to say one that is heavy on the shooting and retro appeal and light on story and RPG mechanics.
Great throwback to old times - as is the case with most of these kind of throwback games they've added a few tweaks - few customisation skills, lives, but it doesnt really detract from the overall experience of that glorious shooty shooty bang bang.
It's hard to critique this - it's not a perfect game - but they've clearly put a lot of work into this and for the effort invested, and the experience of the final product, it's well worth a purchase.
The game starts off as a generic Doom/Hexen clone but evolves into so much more.
The game incorporates upgrade paths and skillincreases that evolves with your own playstyle. Furthermore the level select system puts a moden spin to the classic 2d shooter concept.
Project Warlock can be played exactly as you choose, melee, magic or guns it's all up to you as a player. The leveldesign is amazing and it forces you to always look behind you after progressing as some items spawns enemies. If you're an advanced player you can always rush the maps to increase the difficulty or you can take your time and bait enemies when low on ammo. Combine the modern elements with a classic, dark themed fast paced shooter you get an absolutely thrilling experience that everyone can enjoy.
