The best there is nowadays

Just like the classic RPGs that "Pillars of Eternity" stands upon and draws inspiration from, this game is great. The graphics, setting and sound lure you into a its fantasy-world and make you want to come back for more. The story has some depths and the characters are believable and as well developed as you could expect from a role-playing game. This game is excellent. The developers made all the right choices. So, if you liked "Baldurs Gate" but don't want to play it again, buy this. You won't be dissapointed. It is more than a hommage to great but old rpgs. It is a worthy successor in every way. That said, there are two points I came accros while playing that need improving: Firstly, the engine is capable of lower resolutions, allowing for the game to run more smoothly on slower machines. Buts sadly, it takes some tweaking to make these available as they are not included in the settings-section of the game. Also, lower resolutions work fine for the world-screen were the action and interaction is happening. But for some reason, inventory screens and character screens as well as dialop screens will clip out of the screen - the lower the resolution, the more they will clip. Since the game doesn't rely on cutting-edge graphics, this should have been mended in the definite edition. 2. The game has been translated into numerous languages. In my case, I chose to run the game in german, my native language. I switched back to english soon. The translation is flawed: Sometimes its just a spelling or typing mistake, sometimes its wrong grammar, sometimes its a bad choice of words, sometimes it just doesn't make much sense at all. The story is pretty deep and dialogs can take a political, spiritual or philosophical as well as an emotional turn. The game relies heavy on this to progress the story and immerse the player into its world, so it should also have been mended in the definite edition. Despite these flaws, I will still give the game five stars. It's unrivaled.

I'd rather play BG2 for the 1000th time

Flavorless. Bland story, gameplay and the general feel are somewhat clumsy. UI bugs (most annoying is the flimmering font in some inventory places). Would maybe consider giving it four stars if it were not so obviusly trying to leech off of Baldurs Gate 2. And if it were *much* less expensive.

Okay, but not great

This game tries to be a modern Baldurs Gate, but seems to misunderstand why that franchis is so beloved, and still played today. Sadly this game gets bogged down in mechanics and dialogue that is just to long, dull and dry. That said it is still a game worth picking up and playing, i've sunk almost 100hours into this and i wilol eventually complete it. Ignore the complaints about the original release disappearing and the new DLC not being available. This is garbage. THe new DLC is free for all owners of the base game

micro-review

This game wanted to be the successor of Baldur's Gate, and succeeded in doing a lot of things right. The mechanics are really good and I wouldn't dare going into detail here but I will say a few things about them. Characters have abilities/spells that they can use a limited number of times per rest (when your party heals and gains some specific bonuses) or combat. It might seem a bit weird in the beginning but it adds an extra level of depth and the opportunity to balance the game. There is "sneaking" but it's quite ineffective compared to other RPGs from the same genre, which actually gives the game a good balance and realism but it's not very interesting and it has limited usefulness. The game also has options for a ton of quality of life improvements, like unlimited inventory and you can loot a large area at once, among some of them. The main story is not told all that great, you're being thrown into it very sudden and you're being told how to feel about it. With time the story and the lore of this world will grow on you and I believe the story gets better; I also liked The White March story line. I would like to say here that The White March not only brings you lots of new locations and stories but it also adds mechanics to the game, so I strongly recommend that you play with it. I liked the graphic art style but the sound track was unimpressive. You get to have a stronghold, which I find really cool; I don't think that this is a spoiler because you have a stronghold button on the interface from the start, it just doesn't do anything until you have control over it. Rating: Barbarian SMASH!!! http://pixelloot.com *Editors' Pick x2*

Fun, but not the D&D universe.

Playing this on LinuxMint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit. Pillars of Eternity is version 3.07.0.1318. It runs and performs well and I only encountered a few minor bugs. One time a stronghold quest did not show the assigned character's name and showed an error in place of it. A few times characters get stuck in objects or walls. It's infrequent enough to not be an issue when you save frequently. This game is much like the Baldur's gate series. The plot is good and so is the game play. It's down fall is that they are not using the familiar D&D universe (class, race, monsters and such). I unfortunately understand this to be a cost of licensing issue. But they also spell common words weird and use unusual names with with weird pronunciations in English. Such that it feels very much un-familiar and takes a lot of time in the game to get somewhat used to it. Also, the crafting, enchanting, and bounding of items I'm not really fond of and have not used it. So far it doesn't seem like it is necessary. Recommended as long as you can live without the D&D universe.
