Awesome game in the spirit of old school CRPG a la BG1/BG2. If you don't like that style of game, you will probably dislike this game. Check out PoE2 for a different experience, they are to me very different games.
A great game, I believe Kingmaker just edges this one for a little more unpredictability, however, the fantastic sound track in 'POE' is worth the price tag alone and the graphics are a little more vibrant.
When I first started this game I was blown away by how immersive it was, the story was gripping and made me really want to play my main a certain way. Artwork is superb, no dungeon or place looks the same, you can see the love put into it in every area, house, dungeon. The music is also good , fully orchestrated. The voice acting is perfect, and professional. (not all dialogue trees are voice acted tho) . There are many unique classes to play with and explore, some are so darn clever. You have a castle you can rebuild and can hire plenty of help. hidden stashes to find, stealing, different story arcs for different reps and reactions.
90hrs in and I seem to have lost that immersion. Why? combat. Its everywhere, wouldnt be a bad thing if it was good but its very cumbersome. I like turn based combat but if you cant see your chars, enemies, or readily access spells, or see debuffs etc then its a trial of patience, not fun. Horrid camera angles, poor zoom makes the battlefield confusing, spell effects hide chars, battles end up a blob of effects, npcs and party members. descriptions of attacks and spells are wonderfully written but make for hard going when you are trying to find a specific attack due to the wordy tool tips and there is no way to organize your 'hot bars'. journal bestiary is practically useless for figuring out mobs strenths/weaknesses. the same combat music and battle yells repeat nonstop. You can set it to auto combat to a point but once again, if it was easier to micromanage then there would be no need, combat would be fun and strategic. Add in long loading screens and its just a bore.
Curiosity for the story and love for my party members still drive me, but in the end I may put it up unfinished and move onto something less irritating or set the difficulty to lame Story Mode. Still worth it for the story, artwork, unique classes, voice acting and truly hilarious party banter
This is a game for the roleplayers of the bioware infinity games. while this isnt going to change the formula like that Neverwinter nights games did, its in the same style of Baldurs gate games. its fun well made and drags you into a great story for far too many hours lol. I hope they keep making more of them.
Ive always wanted to get into CRPGS, as finding a real group for PPRPGs has always been unrealistic for me, Ive tried them all and could never finish them. Although I find myself coming back to the baldurs gate and nwn series multiple times a year for years now and never getting far before I leave and repeat the process. This game Pillars of Eternity has me coming back every time wanting to finish it. Ive never found myself so indepth with a Crpg like this one, its frustrating and satisfying all at once. It just reminds me of how great a company can be compared to all the AAA crap today. This game has a lot to offer and I mean a lot it makes me feel like I'm playing the closest thing to a D&D game without actual players than the actual D&D games make me feel, aside from atmosphere. Now with that being said I'm not familiar with 3.5 for BG and the other titles aside from what those games have to offer and I think Im finally determined to finish them but when I am home from work and on my pc I always spend some time on this game. The classes feel genuine, the story keeps me hooked for someone who gets bored easily, the combat is challenging but the the difficulty settings are so well balanced, and the connection to how you can really think about how you want your character and make it happen in game. The customization for the races are kinda dull which is about the only thing I find disappointing but if you can get past having to have a million options to choose from this game is totally worth it. Go into it thinking about how youd make a character in 5e. Anyway as Beamdog has been the only other company Ive thanked for the awesome support and great entertainment as do you Obsidian get this thanks from me. Keep up the Awesome work!
