Last itteration PoE1? Time for a review!
Pillars of Eternity... i still don´t know what they are, the adra stones? Perhaps or maybe not. Who knows, i suppose not even the developers do. They went thieving and grabbing through a whole plethora of genre tropes to create their own warped version of edo fantasy. This isn´t very original but they are true to their word, since they kind of promised this stuff in their kickstarter pitch. They also mostly managed to implement all stretch goals and were good at managing their recources to be on time with the release. The story and writing is enjoyable, overall a good worldbuilding. There are sidequests and there is exploration but for the main quest there is a very linear path. You can choose one of three factions later in the game but this is of minor consequence. There are some keydecisions to make in the main quest and with your companion quests which will later be reflected in the epilogue which i liked. They created a comprehensible attribute system to replace the outdated d&d rules, now every point counts. But it looks better on paper than it playes out, because bugs and glitches that were reported again and again persist to this day. To play at the hardest level in expert-ironman mode to give you the best tactical challenge and immersion is frustrating to no end when a character has the order to engage in close combat with an opponent and then takes the farthest most ridiculous path passing other opponents (and getting hit by strikes of opportunity), and a bug with an consumable item in the quickslot kills you (it shows the animation but the character somehow dosn´t consume the healing-potion). This game could have been better with more time and money but its is what it is, and i grade it good. You are creating your own avatar so you´re anyway doing half of the storytelling in your head. While more pleasing to the eye than BG1 and BG2 it dosn´t reach the complexity of a BG2, and sadly no multiplayer which i loved in BG and IWD. Well, looking forward to PoE2!
