My most played game in the last 10 years
As a single-player game without mods, MechWarrior 5 is fun but limited. It got about 30 hours out of me before DLC, and was a solid mech game. I got my money's worth. But now, after years of DLC support, a huge modding community, and having experienced the utter joy that is the co-op multiplayer? It's phenomenal. The fully unlocked mechlab offered by the Yet Another Mech Lab series of mods turns an excellent framework of a game into something truly incredible, and the tactical flexibility offered by playing with friends just takes it all to a whole different level. There's nothing quite like zipping around in a fast scout mech, keeping one enemy locked for your Long Range Missile-addicted squadmate to sandblast into oblivion, while you circle around and backstab the other guys trying to push them back. I'm not new to the series. I've played 3 and 4, and I won't pretend that they don't do some things better than this game. The plot here is serviceable but not stellar - but the people who act like this is an abomination to the franchise are just denying themselves the chance to enjoy a great game. Take what they say with a pinch of salt, set your expectations away from a linear, narrative-driven experience, and you too can find the gem of a game that has swallowed about 650 hours of my life.
