My most played game in the last 10 years

As a single-player game without mods, MechWarrior 5 is fun but limited. It got about 30 hours out of me before DLC, and was a solid mech game. I got my money's worth. But now, after years of DLC support, a huge modding community, and having experienced the utter joy that is the co-op multiplayer? It's phenomenal. The fully unlocked mechlab offered by the Yet Another Mech Lab series of mods turns an excellent framework of a game into something truly incredible, and the tactical flexibility offered by playing with friends just takes it all to a whole different level. There's nothing quite like zipping around in a fast scout mech, keeping one enemy locked for your Long Range Missile-addicted squadmate to sandblast into oblivion, while you circle around and backstab the other guys trying to push them back. I'm not new to the series. I've played 3 and 4, and I won't pretend that they don't do some things better than this game. The plot here is serviceable but not stellar - but the people who act like this is an abomination to the franchise are just denying themselves the chance to enjoy a great game. Take what they say with a pinch of salt, set your expectations away from a linear, narrative-driven experience, and you too can find the gem of a game that has swallowed about 650 hours of my life.

Mediocre and hard to get into

This Mechwarrior game is kind of strange to review. It's pretty, has a lot of great effects and explosions, and has received several expansions and patches. However, I just could not get into it. I played MW2 back in the 1990s and loved it. I also played MW4 and thought it was pretty good. But this one left me cold after just 3 missions. The controls seem clunkier than even the 1995 game, and the game lacks the same sense of tension and dread that you felt when an enemy mech lumbered up to you firing missiles at your legs to maim and disable you. Maybe I just didn't play long enough to get immersed, but after a few hours of chasing annoying little tanks and airplanes around while stumbling into destructible infrastructure, I just kept asking myself, "why?" Why not drop me into some real action after the tutorial mission? Why am I getting stuck on the terrain? Why the long trudge back to the drop ship after each mission? Why is the background music so awful? Again, I assume that the game might get more interesting after several missions and several hours of play, but why torment me with minor, boring busy work until then? Looking back, I probably should have just jumped into the career mode and skipped the base-game campaign. At least the game may have picked up a bit in that mode, or so I've read. Anyhow, I probably won't go back to this, though I spent almost $40 on it. If you must play this, definitely get it on deep discount (no more than $20) and be prepared to be patient with it for the first few hours. Otherwise, if you can't be bothered--at least initially--with a dry narrative, pesky controls, and cliché missions, give this one a hard pass.

Great for tactics

Been rolling my Spider 30 ton mainly. It is a Hero Mech version with dual AMS anti-missile defenses of the class 6 variety. I have modified it extensively so that it can exceed 149 kmh and it has all class 5 and 6 weaponry. Extremely hard to hit at that speed. Example game play: Last mission I had a Rifleman for long range support and two assault mechs, one a King Crab and one an Annihilator. I will scout with the extremely fast Spider and on enemy contact I will make a decision, take down the enemy or bring it into range of the heavies... If I bring it into range of the heavies, now the enemy has a choice to make... Expose its rear armor to a 100 ton class Assault Mech (not a good idea), or expose its rear armor to me (also not a good idea). Either way, it doesn't go well for them. You can exploit them in this way. I read below that some feel threatened in a 75 ton class Mech. You should feel threatened if another 75 ton class Mech shows up. Then it is one on one. The better pilot wins and it could be 50/50 just like it should be. Tactics and effective use of your squad will always win the day though... I am good enough to where I won't even lose a weapon on any of my Mech's in a given mission. Last thought: Level up your team. If a teammate is weak in laser weapons, put him in a mech with only laser weapons. He will learn. A good pilot is worth more than an additional 100 ton mech.

This is the Best MW Title

I got off to a bad start with this game because developers can do silly stuff these days. And there is a few things in there that could be redone - like how hard points work on the mech. And traits for the main character. But this is basically everything I've wanted in a MW game since MW2, and then they expanded on it all. It's got a few issues to be fair. There's an issue with advanced graphics settings that I'm sure they'll fix. But no Mech title has had me smiling as much, or just outright glad that they did a certain thing. I never thought we'd get the salvage mechanic again, never thought we'd see the scale of the mechs represented correctly, or so many of them in a game, or so much of the universe to play. There's just too much to write down in terms of what they got right, and only minor things they got wrong that will probably be done by mods. And it's a mod supporting game so installing them is easy. We need another expansion. Happy to pay full price. And I think the last time I paid full price for a game was over 10 years ago. To summarize: everything the community has wanted for over 25 years in MW games, they seem to have nailed completely. They took notes, put it in the game, and added stuff that's fantastic. And you should support this developer.

Very disappointing

AI is stupid as mud, the tank models look like they have been borrowed from an old WWII game, only two missions where you can repair your mech in the field, the "complexity" of a mission is mostly determined by the amount of enemy tanks/aircrafts and their respawn rate.
