Overall this DLC is worth the money, the new mission types are great, especially the new war missions, makes it feel like a Battlefield game. The new storyline is also a plus, unlike the main game's inconsequential story, it actually involves you in major lore accurate conflict. The additional biomes also greatly increase the variety
However, my one main complaint is they seemed to have removed the drop cinnematic where you leave the leopard at the start of every mission. This may not seem like a big deal, but for me that drop sequence added greatly to the immersion. If some found it boring, all they had to do was add an option to enable or disable it in the menu. Other than that, it is a great DLC
The new campaign is just what was needed in career mode. It’s a good story that spans a few different planets and puts you in the middle of events in the lore with set piece battles. You get limited access to the store during the campaign, but you can typically find everything you need and usually have enough time to repair mechs between missions. Still, it pays to have a couple spare mechs in case you need more time to complete repairs and a firestarter/quickdraw for the odd raid mission or jumpjet restricted optional objective. The constraints make sense in the context of where you are and what you are doing, like in MW3 when you were fighting your way across enemy territory cut off from reinforcements. The only suggestion I have is swapping the pre-mission wall of text with MW3 style drone footage and fully voiced briefings. I hope we get more DLCs with time-locked lore-based campaigns like this in the future.
Melee is great addition and gives you a bit more leeway with low ammo builds running dry or charging in and punching mechs when you’re too hot to keep shooting. It makes aggressive play possible in the early game with mechs that don’t have DHS or ES upgrades. Likewise, the new biomes look great and I'm really looking forward to the modders making use of the new assets. None of the new mech variants stick out to me as particularly useful, but I might change my mind once I know which ones have upgrades. I'm surprised they haven’t added something like that mod that identifies which upgrades a mech has. I really wish we could have gotten some new mechs though, as this would have been the perfect opportunity to introduce the Axeman or Hatchetman. I haven’t tried the all-out-war scenarios yet as I’m still working my way through the campaign, but if it’s near the same quality as the HotIS mini-campaigns, it’ll just be icing on the cake.
All in all a great DLC and easily worth $20, unless you're broke, in which case stop playing games and get a job you commie!
As of writing this review there are a number of audio, graphical and input-related bugs that, while not game breaking, reduce the experience somewhat.
The main storyline is great, but short. The voiceacting is passable to good, however the player character doesn't talk at all throughout which I found strange.
The new biomes for the most part are interesting to play in, especially the megacity despite apparently being made of mostly recycled assets and not being usable with all gamemodes like the others. They also included new soundtracks specific to each new biome which are all pretty good; However they seem to play 90% of the time you're in the biome, so despite how good they are I can see it getting a little old. They're also not included in the downloadable extras, which is unfortunate.
The new side missions were enjoyable, however as a whole I found them to be not quite as good as the HOTIS DLC missions.
There are some new gamemodes, which at face value appear to be just the old game modes but with a slight twist. There are also more base mech variants, but no new chassis and from what I can tell there are also no new hero mechs this time.
There's also a new plotline-relevant paint pattern, but it doesn't work on all mechs as of writing this; However, the mechs it doesn't work on turn into resin figures which I thought was funny.
The free Melee update provides most mechs with close-range options that increase build variety, and properly fleshes out some mechs I previously considered boring to use. Pummeling mechs is addicting, but you'll wreck your own mech if you're not careful since your AI ally's stray shots tend to hit you and the mechs you melee also tend to hit back.
All in all, what's there is good, and considering the HOTIS DLC released just under four months before this came out I'm surprised it's as good as it is; However, the main story's short, there's not as much side content and the side content isn't quite as good. It's a stretch at 20$.
I do want to say first of all that what this DLC does provide is pretty nice, the new mission types are solid enough to feel fresher than they should and the campaign missions and new biomes are not bad either. Unfortunately this DLC does not have any new Mechs (only new variants of existing Mechs). This combined with the $20 asking price and a few bugs are enough for me to not recommend picking it up unless you can get it on sale.
