Amazing

Mechwarrior 5 is simply amazing. For anyone unaware it is an action game with management and strategy elements based in the future where we have colonized the galaxy and fight in 100 ton mechs. The story is connected to Battletech lore as you progress through the timeline. As the lore goes, most wars take place through mercenaries. The lore is extensive, but you dont need to know it to enjoy it. In MW5 you can play the campaign or career and can play co op with a friend in both taking them on missions as a lancemate. The story is a pretty average vengeance story for a video game, but the Battletech lore story in the backdrop makes it amazing since it is so detailed. Its a sandbox with unlimited replayability. There are around 10 mission types with procedurally gen maps, but they are adding more and there are many mods that add content The gameplay is very much like the previous entry, MW4M. You have a merc company that you have to manage equipment, personnel, mechs, reputations, repairs, upgrades, all while traveling the galaxy looking for missions. Both the campaign and career offer substantial freedom to go where you want and do what you want. In the campaign you are forced into certain alliances and starting areas, but in career you can decide for yourself, but miss out on the campaign missions. The graphics and sound are excellent. I have not seen any glaring graphical bugs or glitches. It runs smooth on my mid to upper tier laptop from 2016 on high settings. The sound is phenominal, pairing with the graphics to create an immersive experience. My only complaints are the soundtrack, which is a form of rock, and Ryanna. The soundtrack isnt bad, it just doesnt have that epic feeling as the MW2 music had, just search for MW2 tracks and youll know what I mean. Ryanna talks a bit during missions and 99% of it is unecessary. This is a worthy successor to the series and theyre continually adding content. Battetech fan or not, I highly recommend it

If they made the original today

In many respects, this game is what MechWarrior 1 would be if they made it today. You're not Gideon Braver Vandenberg in this case; the character is a merc to start out with. But the gameplay loop is true to the original, albeit smoother and more fun. The 'mechs feel more like gigantic walking battle tanks than ever before. The lore is immersive and the acting is believable (albeit with the occasional and forgivable "what's in the box?!" moments). One of the really fun parts of this game is that if you don't like the way something works, you can mod it--or grab one of the many very well-done mods in the community--and change fundamental aspects of the game to your liking. Too easy? Make it harder. Don't like that clean windshield? We've got gritty, frosty, rain-speckled replacements. You think that weight limit is ridiculous? So does somebody else, and there's a mod to shut it off. Want more options for your company signet? Please, that's just the start. In short, if you like power fantasies where your opponents are as powerful as you, and you prefer the option to tweak practically everything about the game experience, you're in for a treat. MW5 is everything MW1 was, plus everything we wished it had been.

Conveys a Universal Truth of Life

I'm really impressed that this game managed to capture a fundamental aspect of life. Just how Gilgamesh had to learn to live with grief and loss, anyone who has started out in a career they loved should be able to relate to this game. The core of the game, the combat simulator, is absolutely amazing. It had me walking around like a kid pantomiming a piston like movement of firing an autocannon. The explosions, destruction, etc. The tension on the missions is just right. Who cares if all your arms got blown off, that was fun! Slowly but surely the fun gets drained away as your career advances. As the game advances you have to care that an irreplaceable Tier V burst fire autocannon was destroyed. A high reward mission might look like a lot of fun until you compare your available funds to the cost of the business trip. Eventually damage gets so expensive that you become irate at the minor incompetence of your employees. You have to really, really scout around for business because you don't want to piss of the wrong people. Really, really gave me the feeling of speedrunning a career as an independent contractor doing something you love, like software development or engineering. The DLC (Legend of the Kestrel Lancers) is why I'm rating the overall game 5 stars.

Amazing game.

Pros: -Insane variety in mech customization. -(only available via Call to Arms DLC) melee Mechs/weapons! -Virtually limitless replayability in career mode. -Great gfx. -Great controls. -Online coop (some tactics like rushing to a base raid with light Mechs is simply not viable with AI). Cons: -AI teammates: not dumb per se, just don't rely too much on them saving the day, unless if they are piloting some ultra-powered assault mech.

If you love Battletech strategy..

This game is really good once you learn the nuance of playing it and get into the full game and campaign mode running your unit. A lot of mission variation, you control where and what you do and there are mods to even tweak things to make it even better. It has some quirks like having to run around in a command center and mech bay that literally serves no real purpose but the game over all is pretty good.
