This would be a five star game if you didn't have to backtrack so much. The quests and lore are intriguing and well-written. It's like being inside a cozy novel.
I'm dissatisfied. The beginning of the game is addictive, the locations are beautiful, you can feel the atmosphere, the plot is ambitious, but then the game is too repetitive. There's too much walking around in circles in very simple fetch, carry missions. On top of that, monsters constantly spawn. I understand that it's hard to develop a character without fighting them, but the combat system isn't all that great either. The animations are dull, and many fights can be clicked through, at least on normal difficulty.
Spiders develops too slowly with the game mechanics, because the setting is great, they've moved forward incredibly with the graphics, but something's wrong with the combat and the missions themselves. It's like a lot of things are being thrown at each other.
Similarly, exploration practically doesn't do anything. We're supposed to run around the map with question marks, extending the game this way, but we often find junk in those chests. Boring.
This game, like Banishers, should be shorter. And some kind of teleport, because running around these repetitive big maps is tiring.
And I'm writing this as a fan of Spiders studio because I've played all of their games except Faery. Sad.
I'd give this game a 7/10, but I'll round up because I did truly enjoy playing it. I think that it's more of a single playthough kind of game and you don't really get that much from additional playthroughs.
Greedfall's biggest strength is the world itself. The 17th century fantasy aesthetic is very cool and some of the character designs are amongst my all time favorites (especially the guardians). However, I think that they fall a bit short with some of the themes and whilst I enjoyed most of my party, some of the characters felt pretty flat.
Also, "things are about to get dicey," and "a bit of poison on my blade, and let's go" will probably be stuck in my head until my dying day. I think someone may have made a mod to fix that though.
Overall, this is still a very solid game and I think that Spiders does deserve your money. I'm excited to see what they will make next!
Just finished it, have about 40 or so hours on this game and it's been wild ride. A lot of plot stuff is pretty fun to deal with while other side quests can be...confusing, at best. Overall, I enjoyed this game.
For me personally, the story is the most important in an RPG, so I put the mechanics aside.
The story is awesome, compelling and easily immersive and the characters feel like real people. Before Greedfall I played Elex and for the whole game I felt no connection to the main character. In the Greedfalls case I was totally in by 20 min of playthrough. The only somewhat element that felt like plastic was romance dialogues that got me thinking that the developers really must be some kind of virgin nerds:D But its still better than romance in Vampyr.
I would definitely recommend buying that game.
