As said in the title. If you like rpgs then this is a must play. You can without a doubt see the difference in polish and quality compared to a game like the witcher 3, but this tells less about this game and more about TW3. This game is an absolute masterpiece lore and story wise. Most character with which you interact are flashed out and you will quickly get favourites. Missions are meaningful and consequences matters. The combat is a bit lacking but it's perfectly serviceable. The island is beautiful and the whole native/colonists theme is done wonderfully. I totally raccomend this game.
Don't usually do reviews, but I felt should with this one.
I was really hoping for something awesome to play, but alas, it didn't live up to the expectations.
The story has so much potential... but was let down by repeated mission styles and some concepts to dragon age story lines (Templars and mages). towards the second half of the game I started skipping most of the dialogue as the game got very repetitive and I reached a state that I just wanted to finish it.
I feel like if I knew what I knew now about it, I probably wouldn't have bought it. so sad...
I waited on this one, and I must say, I was blown away by the quality of my experience. It hooked me immediately and kept me playing for more than 40 hours, and I still didn't experience everything I could have.
Some people compare it to Bioware, and I think that's an apt comparison. It reminded me a lot of the older Bioware titles, like Jade Empire, Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age Origins. It even follows a familiar formula: become some neutral-but-important figure, gain main quest, get faction-based side-quests, get companions, get companion-based side-quests, have up to two companions with you at any given time. The story is good and engrossing, and the characters are alright, but where it really excels is in revealing the world to you, which is very well-done on many levels.
The core of gameplay turns on combat, with a dash of stealth gameplay and branching dialogue. This latter seems more present in the early game, which rewards exploration, but towards the end I noticed it fell off a bit. Combat is well done, but there's a lack of variety when it comes to enemies, so it becomes somewhat rote after the first ten or so hours. Combat is also a bit on the easy side: consider increasing the difficulty.
The game is beautiful and has very few bugs, but it's clearly not a AAA experience. Assets tend to be heavily re-used and you'll run into a few bugs, but nothing really game breaking (though one prevented me from finishing a quest).
I really enjoyed this like I haven't enjoyed a game in a long time. I definitely recommend picking it up. I'll be paying more attention to Spiders from now on.
Got the PS4 version when it was on deep discount. Amazing value. The story was compelling, the character work was solid, the graphics are respectable. Definitely a cut above the previous entries, and hopefully a sign of greater things in the future.
The ending was a bit rushed, and the DLC was, quite frankly, undercooked. But again, if you can get it on sale, it's well worth the time investment. And if you are a fiend for storyline-rich action RPGs, a la Bioware, then you'd be happy even without the sale price.
One caveat: it's well worth getting the mods. Per many Spiders' titles, the game balance can be a bit off for some people. Especially if you just want to play with the different abilities. So I never minded giving myself a head start with the leveling. Other than that and the rushed ending/DLC, no complaints.
