I had low expectations of this game, but it really surprised me. In RPGs i value story and immersion, and Greedfall delivers on those. Unique story that will keep you guessing about what's going to happen next. Unique quests, none of this kill 12 rabbits and collect 7 apples nonsense. The world is beautiful and immersive. Gear and weapons are awesome looking and very unique, unlike anything i've see so far in other games. I enjoyed this game greatly!
The bad: -1 star for recycling NPC skins and building layouts throughout the game, very immersion breaking.
It ain't a Witcher 3, but all in all a solid game. i would recommend it, a hidden gem indeed!
Greedfall gets kudos from me for being ambitious and, mostly, doing what it sets out to do. On the surface, it's an action-adventure RPG in the vein of Dragon Age, but set in a pseudo-Renaissance era where black powder flintlocks and muskets are commonplace alongside nautical navigation instruments and magic. And rather than being placed between feuding kingdoms and bloodlines, de Sardet (the main character) is a diplomat arguing against governors and tribal leaders on an island in the midst of colonization.
Out of the starting gate, the backdrop sets this game apart. The scenery is gorgeous and saturated with colours besides brown and grey, the cities exhibit distinct historical architectures from each other, and the nature of your work as a diplomat necessitates either cooperation and investigation, or crushing those who oppose you and using your title to get away with it. And while the island natives are a major power in the story, they aren't portrayed as helpless or ignorant. They're warlike and dangerous and play a serious role in the history of the island.
The gameplay is what you would expect of a AA title. This didn't have a huge budget and it shows in the simplistic navigation and combat, but because of that they had to do a lot more with what they had, and considering that, Spiders have built a lot on the standard formula. Social stealth mechanics based on one's outfit, a language for the natives that feels much more fleshed out than the usual couple of words in other RPGs, politics and intrigue based on each faction's respective history, and even small quality of life additions all make this a stand-out title.
Don't compare this to the AAA Bioware games with bloated budgets and persistent bugs and crashes long after release. Greedfall does the best it can with what it has, and it pulls that off with aplomb and class. The system might not be new, but the story they tell with it certainly is. Set your expectations and try it; you won't be disappointed.
Well after 4hrs of playing this one, I have been really impressed by the overall story and especially by the side quests. The setting is quite unique so far, visuals are impressive, voice acting is excellent. One of my favorite features of the game is the mouth/lip movements which are some of the most realistic that I have seen when characters speak - yes a detail but important since there is quite a bit of dialogues.
You cannot compare this to AC or Witcher because the world is semi open and not as detailed as other massive RPGs but the details have been sufficient to keep me immersed in the story. Giving this a 5 because this is exactly what I expect from an indie RPG: remarkable story & setting, good game mechanics and top-notch voice acting.
Amazing story. Great flintlock fantasy. I highly recommend this just for the story's sake. The fight mechanics is also nice, having different paths you can take. Leveling up is nicely balanced so you can't simply max out everything and become a master of everything. You actually have to think what playstyle suits you. And it affects everything. But besides the fight mechanics, did I already mention how great story this has?
The negative parts:
I played it when it was released on Steam and back then it had some minor bugs that needed to be polished out. Most common were Tetras getting frozen in t-pose and camera going in all wild angles (f.ex. in a bush or behind a barrel) during outdoors cut scenes. I'm sure those are already fixed. Hopefully these minor bugs are not an issue any longer.
Sometimes on PC there's a few moments when even with RTX 2080 Ti and 32GB RAM the framerate drops significantly. Don't know if this has been fixed already.
The world is not really an open world. It's very much like The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings' world. You load in to an area and in that area you have some freedom of movement, but a lot of it is paths. It kinda works, but I would have enjoyed an actual open world more.
Other than that, can't think of anything else negative about this game. I'm pretty sure I already mentioned how great this story is.
I will be getting Greedfall II if they make it.
