Forge this new world’s destiny, as you befriend or betray companions and entire factions. With diplomacy, deception and force, become part of a living, evolving world - influence its course and shape your story.
Engage in a core roleplaying experience – achieve quests and complete objectives in a multitude of different ways – through combat, diplomacy, deception, or stealth.
Complete freedom in character progression – play as a male or female, customize your appearance, and freely choose your abilities, spells and skills.
Delve into a mysterious world of magic – begin a grand journey and uncover ancient secrets protected by supernatural beings, manifestations of the island’s earthly magic.
Pros: Good story concept.
Cons: Clunky combat and movement mechanics (got stuck twice in first 4 hours), poor quest design, so-so writing and bad pacing.
This is how an rpg should be today.
They put together an intresting story filled with meaningful choices, the right amount of secondary quests that are just as intresting as the main quests (so to be clear, they aren't fetch quests) to make a nice rpg, and then they blended it together with a souls like combat (the companions system also kinda work like it does in souls like games, but it's actually meaningful and there are also stuff like companions quests, romance and so on. So, to put it simply, it's how it's supposed to be in an rpg).
All this stuff together make this game what an rpg is supposed to be.
Honestly, don't trust who says that the game is bad, imo they don't know what an rpg is supposed to be. To be clear, it's not that this game is perfect, but it's a great rpg nontheless. What I mean is that this game is focused on the story with its multiple choices (it's an rpg indeed) and that's what it does. So yes, the combat isn't as good as a proper action game, but that's not the point of this game in the fist place. Same thing goes for the story btw. It's not the story itself that make this game good, it's the choices that you have both in the dialogues and outside of them (for example you're free to attack someone, sneak into his house without getting cought, bribe him or whatever).
And yes, they reused a lot of assets, but I mean, this is a AA game, and at the end of the day, who cares? The game is great even though the cities look the same.
So yes this is how an rpg is supposed to be today, I agree with who says that this feels like if the golden age bioware made an rpg today.
Greedfall is Spiders best game to date. A game with flaws in every area, which is lifted by its multi part story and side quests. None of which are mediocre, all of which build into the larger narrative. An excellent colonial era setting, with something to say about how Europeans treated the lands of the Americas and beyond. Voice acting is great (with exceptions) and characters are fleshed out enough to care about, though with a bigger budget far more could have been done here. Combat is fast and action packed though certain aspects (Guns) feel overpowered.
If I have any issues with the game Apart from the Sound problems I encountered it would be the world itself. The world is detailed and lovely but it feels static and empty. Towns are bereft of citizens and those that do exist merely stand around all the time or follow very basic back and forth scripts. Similarly the creatures in the world have no routine and aren’t varied enough after 60 hours.
But not to end on a low note, this game deserved to be played by anyone who loved the original Dragon Age or RPG’s and I can’t wait to see where spider go next. Hopefully, a return to the colonial era world of Greedfall.
Besides the fairy rpg most spiders games are pretty much the same just building a little or a lot on the mechanics of the previous game. Play technomancer then this game and this game you see inspite of a lot of improvements it plays basically the same, Its weird non open world creation until you realize that it just looks big and open but it really is not. unlike technomancer I did find myself getting tired of the tedium a little faster. It is a good direction for spiders to go but its not a 5 star affair compared to recent rpg titles. It looks good and the story is ok and combat has a few good moments but at least for me it wears thin fairly quicly when you get beyond the dazzle. I say give it ago but keep in mind its a spiders game.
I have just reached level 20 and I am positively surprised by this game. I didn't expect too much because of some reviews but i am happy to have bought the game. Sure, its mechanics are not as sophisticated as The Witcher games (though a lot of features have obviously been borrowed from it), and it is not open world, but what this game truly shines at is the original setting, the intelligent story and quests (even the side quests are meaningful and well written), and the amicable party members and their great voice acting. I simply feel good in the company of these "people". The colonialization background of Teer Fradee is interesting and still a current topic.
I play de Sardet as a gunner, with a light one-handed weapon (a rapier or saber) and armor that suits his diplomat style. The guns and rifle skill is extremely versatile and useful, especially in combination with Science 2 which allows you to craft your ammunition. So I always have enough ammo with me. The rifles break armor better, so against opponents with high armor, I always use rifles. Always pick guns with a high fire rate. I have followed the weapons coating tree which is good, ant the bomb skill is extremely useful to break armor and to weaken crowds. It does not take too much effort to refill the fury bar to maximum during fighting, and you can always drink a fury potion to do so. Overall, the skill trees are just right for me, they allow for some differentiation of your play style but are no too complicated. The difficulty level at Normal is just right for me, with a bit of a challenge but no frustration (and the difficulty level can be adjusted at any time of the game).
