Plan on dying a lot. It's a foregone conclusion. I haven't read the instructions, either. But, that didn't stop me from playing and having a decent go of it. Ship is easy to control. Dogfights are entertaining. Resource gathering is pretty solid. The enemies show up so quickly even on easy and doesn't really allow much time to explore before fleeing. You lose credits at death but not your available Perks so you can improve your ship over time. I do which there was more mystery and finding cool or neat objects. It's much like Elite Dangerous in the generated planetary systems but not as complicated as E:D.
I had been interested in this game for awhile but wanted to wait for a sale to get it.
This game is FUN! It's repetitiveand can be very hard, but I am really enjoying it.
I started out on normal difficulty and just could barely survive.
Switched to easy and I can survive much better, but some areas are still difficult. I have yet to make it through all sectors, even on easy.
I've been building up my perks and even with several extra perks, going to normal difficulty seems impossible!
I wish the game gave more info on certain things. I've had to look stuff up online to see how certain things worked, or what you are supposed to do in certain scenarios.
I also think the perks could be a little more powerful for the cost, or that they weren't so expensive.
Graphics are beautiful, music and sound is great.
As you make your way through what remains of war torn patch of milky way, you will take a stroll down memory lane and how nice it was to explore and blow stuff up in Freelancer.
With expansion included, ways to go about your business is straight forward and honestly over 9000.
Story here is just enough to round up activities, and graphics are downright gorgeus. I like look and feel of Unreal Engine, its perfect for space games.
This title is first and foremost for people who want to sit down for hour or two, blow some stuff up, pick some stuff up, and move on with their day. Definitely worth on sale, probably worth regular price - if you would just like to relax from spreadsheets, fitting tools, 3rd party and wiki pages that modern space games come with.
This one has old soul and brand new technical body.
Very much recommended.
ps
I've picked it up along with expansion right from start,
so there's that.
Everspace is one of those games that delivers thrills and excitement around every corner. Whether you're taking down outlaws, exploring the carcass of a ruined ship, or searching an asteroid field for mineable resources, the moment-to-moment gameplay is always interesting.
Gameplay-wise, Everspace consists of flying through procedurally-generated sectors in a starfighter, blasting enemies, finding resources, looting ruined ships, and repairing and upgrading your ship. Each location is different, and there are no persistent space stations or anything of that sort. If you die on a run, you start over at Sector 1, but you do get to spend any credits you collected on upgrades to your ship. These roguelike elements require some caution when dogfighting, as often it is wiser to jump to the next sector rather than try and fight it out. Some may find restarting annoying, but I like the air of danger it adds to every encounter. The sectors get harder as you go, but there are also powerful weapons and upgrades to be optained, and this makes it easier to stay alive.
Everspace does have a story. It unfolds little by little via cutscenes triggered at certain times, and story progress carries over from run to run. If you die all the time and just keep returning to Sector 1, there will be very little storyline, but the story ramps up the farther you get without dying and adds extra incentive for continuing on.
Everspace stuns in the graphics department. Every location is absolutely beautiful, and every object in the game is highly detailed. Lighting and explosions in particular blow me away every time. There's also a great soundtrack that adds to the presentation.
One thing I found myself occasionally missing was space stations or bases to dock at Galaxy-on-Fire-style. This is a different type of game, though, and that would probably just bog down the action.
If you can't stand the thought of starting over at death, Everspace isn't for you, but overall I love it. 5/5
I bought this on sale while seeking out something related to Freespace and Freespace 2. I fired this up and became engrossed in the mechanics of play and found several hours later that I should have been asleep for a while.
Subsequent plays have only encouraged more play and more time spent with this game.
