As previous reviews have pointed out this game has no ramp in difficulty - its just a solid mile high wall that you repeatedly smash your head against.
Foolishly I thought to myself: 'How bad can it be?', the difficulty
I appreciate that different people have different skill levels but this seems ridiculous, I would try a lower difficulty level but this results in a slower rate of progression and the levels of difficulty for normal is literally called 'how you were meant to die', and you will, many many times. Considering getting a refund.
Unfortunately, while I did want to give Everspace a fair shot, I cannot find myself going further than the 3 odd hours I've played of the game. Like several other reviewers, there are clear cut shortcomings to the game that simply limit my own personal enjoyment and may impact others if you too find that you're not a fan of this type of roguelike game.
I could go into great detail, but I'll try to summarize as best I can. First off, death mechanics. If you're not a fan of dying over and over again, avoid this title entirely; the majority of the 'normal run' game mechanics rests on the concept that you will be blown to bits and, given how weak you are upon entry, this will happen in even basic firefights.
Controls, which feel rather clunky on a keyboard and mouse interface. (Those with an Xbox controller or similar interface may find their experience improved, but I am unable to judge that.)
While there is also a semblance of a plot, it is neither engaging enough nor explored deeply enough for me to wish to continue, which is perhaps the most egregious part of any gameplay.
I will add however that the game is visually appealing and the level of detail on the ships and designs is noticeable, but can hardly compensate for all the other shortcomings.
I would say that there will be those who enjoy it, but please be aware that you'll be dying constantly, repeating similar encounters with random elements thrown in throughout. Please keep in mind, I also purchased this on sale and still cannot find myself having justified the price paid. If this is not your cup of tea, consider GoG's many other offerings.
Far gone are the days when a gaming session could last hours - at least for me. I was looking for a game I could spend as little as 15 minutes with and still get something out of. This game was a perfect match.
If you want to know more read other reviews. All I can say is that the game is fun and very enjoyable.
It's not a "bad" game by any means, but... I can't bring myself to say it's good, either; there are too many contrary design elements for it to feel cohesive as a whole.
On one hand, it looks amazing and on the other you're punished for flying around enjoying that fact. The combat's great, but you're encouraged to alpha enemies due to how their stats scale. The narrative is interesting, but it's undermined by the roguelite elements and gameplay loop. This applies in reverse too, of course. Idk. I just don't feel like it's worth my time.
So I start in a ship, without memory, without a story, without a reason. An AI doesn't give me a story or goal either. As soon as I want to explore a bit to the left or right I get killed after a few seconds and I need to restart. The game denies to give me any motivation why I should do that again, no vision, no goal, no reason.
Maybe I am able to get better with every try, upgrade something every time I die and retry, but as the game doesn't tell me why, I somehow don't care about doing so.
