Funniest. Game. Ever.

Ridiculously difficult, and fundamentally flawed as a game, but it's absolutely hilarious with all the head & limb-chopping, and will keep you amused for quite a while. I am in awe of anyone who ever managed to finish this though. And the low-rent, Sean Connery sound-alike they got to do your character's voice is a fine touch - get your leg hacked off and you'll see what I mean!

An creative, innovative mess

"Die by the Sword" is no doubt a quality game, or rather, it _was_ a quality game back in the day. It definitely has a lot of cool and innovative concepts as well as a great feeling and a brutal, dark medieval look. So what brings this game down? All the technical issues it has, which are pretty severe. I've played loads of GOG.com releases and have rarely run into any problems, at least no game-breaking ones. Sadly, this one is full of them. You simply have to look through the forum to see that it has a bunch of "unsolved" issues, which is very disappointing to say the least. Thus, I can't give this game a higher score than this, even though I would have liked to.

Not really all that good...

I think how is a good word to describe this game. How does this work? How do I fight? How do I not let the first enemies in the game kill me? But most importantly: How can I stop flailing my sword around like an idiot? After trying all the control schemes available to me, I've come to the conclusion, that I have absolutely no idea how to play this game. The tutorial doesn't help, nor does the options menu help. The problem is not that I don't know what to do. It's that it just doesn't seem to work. The game seems barely functional to me. The very interesting and surely innovative VSIM control scheme just doesn't seem to work properly. The controls are horribly dated. You're supposed to be able to swing your sword in all directions, using your mouse (or your num-pad. But I can't use that control scheme because my keyboard doesn't have a numpad and trying to remap the controls to anything but a numpad makes the game even worse for me). But swinging with a mouse just doesn't feel right at all. Instead of swinging the sword, your character will just wiggle it around in seemingly random directions. I feel like I'm fighting the controls more than I'm fighting the enemies in the game, which is a shame because the gore seems to be supprisingly elaborate, especially for a game of this age. Just moving my mouse from the left to the right and back again, results in the sword being moved seemingly random directions. So much so , that it feels more like my character does anything but follow my commands. Couple this with tank-like turning controls and you have a game that is more clunky than anything I've ever played. It's likely just me doing something wrong. Others seem to have no issues playing the game. Maybe there is a fatal flaw in the way I try to play the game. Either way, though this game certainly isn't beginner friendly at all. I did not have a great time playing this. So I can not recommend this game.

Really fun gsme, nice violence!

pros: Ultra Violent, you can cut of other peoples limbs and see the blood fly in all directions, Cool. Sword fighting! Man would I love to do that in real life :( Cons: Controls, controls, and... controls. TERRIBLE! conclusion: definitely buy it, it's a GREAT game, lots of blood and actions, and cool weapons, but the controls aren't too handy. You'll get used to them, tough :)
