Innovative...
... Tragically, that's all I can say for this game. Tried it twice, with two control schemes (Keyboard arcade and Mouse VSIM) and neither of them were right. With the mouse everything was a wild swinging about, trying to position the sword right in an aggresively unfun attempt to land some blows while trying to figure out how to make it fun. The keyboard was slightly better, though not by much. Not having to hassle about with the mouse was nice, but it went from maddeningly wild swinging about with the mouse to banging on the keyboard, and watching my avatar languidly swing about his sword as though he was underwater, while the enemy was jumping around like a rabbit hopped up on meth after a freak lab accident caused him to switch brains with Jack the Ripper. The camera was another issue, not helping the case at all, sine it would jerk about randomly, presumably at one time having been designed to keep the enemy in front of the camera at all times, but now merely trying its damn hardest to keep you from being able to orient yourself with the clumsy Tank Controls you're saddled with. Once I accidentally fell into a lava pit, and then while trying to get out, the camera made me walk further in, allowing me the luxury of burning to death while trying not scream in frusteration and wake everybody in the house up. And speaking of the Tank Controls, it is damn hard to tell where you're actually facing. At first I was under the impression it was where your body was pointed, but them I walked to the side when I wanted to walk forward. Then I suspected it was where your head was turned, and I think that may have been the answer, but everytime I tried to check it, a crazed orc would jump at me and I'd start swinging the mouse wildly/ bashing the mouse buttons and turning myself to try and face the orc. In summary: unnecessarily complex controls, or simply boring, take your pick, awful camera, poor character handling, and simply not very fun. I wanted to like this game, I really did. There is a tragic lack of bloody, M-rated fantasy action games, especially ones an older, crappier computer can run, and I hoped this game would fill the void. I remember playing the demo for a game called Severance: Blade of Darkness that was a lot of fun. Maybe that game will be on here someday. Until then, save your money. 2 stars on innovation alone.
