Description
You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer on the spacecraft USG Ishimura. You're not a warrior. You're not a soldier. You are, however, the last line of defense between the remaining living crew and deadly reanimated corpses. The undead have become Necromorphs; horrific zombie-alien hybrids that won't succumb to traditional means. Fortunately, your offense is equally unique, as the high-powered mining tools at your disposal provide the means to fight against the threat.

Messy monster slaying.
The Necromorphs are unlike any enemies you've seen before. Headshots do about as much damage to them as flicking rubber bands. To survive, you'll need to dismember their insect-like limbs, one at a time.

Improvised weapons.
There aren't many traditional firearms aboard the Ishimura, but there's plenty of stopping power in Isaac's toolkit. Send horizontal or vertical blasts of energy at enemies with the Plasma Cutter, remotely control a high-speed sawblade with the Disc Ripper, and fill hallways with wide swaths of destruction with the Line Gun. Switch things up with alternate fire modes, and purchase upgrades to increase ammo, power, and reload speed.

Real-time attacks.
Whatever you do, don’t drop your guard. Everything takes place in real-time. That means any action you take, whether it be reloading or digging through your inventory, gives the Necromorphs a perfect opportunity to attack. This nightmare has just begun and it’s up to you to get to the bottom of what happened here.

Survival of the bravest collector

Honestly I did not think about it as a Survival Horror Game, because of the jumpscares, atmospheric elements and enemy placement (You will love and hate it at the same time), which were absolutely superb compared to other games. The thing which gave me goosebumps was the ressource management. I had existencial worries when my ammo was low, which contributed to the horror aspect of this game. The first part of the game was literally the hell for me as the ressources were scattered everywhere and you had to discover every way to find ammo and ammo was the only thing which granted you an Illusion of Safety on Hard, as every Necromorph was a lifetreathening Danger. The different kinds of Necromorph perfectly fitted into this game. For Example the babies gave the game a thirddimensional aspect as they were crawling over the walls while the other tried to kill you on the ground. New creatures were introduced at right times to bring variety to the gameplay, thus making it even more intense. At first you were helpless against new kinds of creatures only knowing that tearing of their extremities will bring you temporary tranquillity, but after many encounters you had a strategy against them. The Gameplay supports this as you can use your environment for your advantage. The Story is also really good written as it fits the atmosphere and you symphatize with Isaac and the others in their fight for survival. But the pinneacle of this game is the atmosphere. Blood on the wall, corpses, desperate tries to fend of the necromorphs, nasty enviroment as there are many Vents and many blind spots and the totally awesome sound. Playing with Headset is not the right Idea for someone who is easily scared. The only thing I did not like were the controlls and the maddening cursor. In my opinion this game is the king of Survival Horror as it combines many aspects of other successfull games to one Hell of a ride.

Probably not for the faint of heart

Dead Space delivers an engaging sci-fi horror story with an amazing atmosphere and some great visuals. Add to it the frightening music and awesome audio design, and you got yourself a fantastic survival horror game! PS. Probably not for the faint of heart.

Horror Perfection

The comparisons to Resident Evil are inevitable, however Dead Space is superior to all the REs in two crucial areas: atmosphere and immersion. Dead Space doesn't scare you. It makes you scare yourself. Everyone has different fears. The monster you don't see is worse than the monster you do. Left to their own imagination, most people will think up something worse than you ever could. The designers understand this and set the pacing accordingly. A constant barrage of monsters cheapens the fear and leads to monotony. Instead you can 15 minutes or more without encountering anything except the eerie silence and occasional clanking in the background. You freak yourself out as you're constantly checking around corners, waiting for something to pop out, but rarely does it. Play this in the dark after midnight with good surround headphones if you dare. Extra underwear recommended. In addition, Isaac is not a badass space marine. He's an engineer, a technician. Nearly all the weapons you get are actually construction tools like plasma cutters, saw blades, and modified welders. You don't just shrug off damage. On higher difficulties, you can actually die if a monster severs one of your limbs, regardless how much life you have left. And you're all alone. Separated from your team early on, your only contact is over radio. No help is coming for you. Adding to the ambience is the backstory you uncover through journals and audio logs scattered about the ship, or the scripted scenes happening at the periphery. Like System Shock of old, it all points to something wrong about the Ishimura. Luckily you don't have to fight the camera and controls like many RE games. There are no cheap scares or surprises just because the camera can't move or because you move and shoot at the same time. This is a rich, satisfying story with difficult but fair gameplay, all racing to see whether you run out of time, health, or sanity first.

GO FOR THE LIMBS!!!

Is dead space any good? I own all the games (including the Wii game), the books, and the movies. Also the graphic novel. The best game is this one. Horror and racing games are my favorite, and Dead Space takes my #3 favorite game (SH2, and SH3 being #1 and #2). While the game is compared to RE4 a lot for the over the shoulder camera, I think is comparing apples to oranges. Both are fruits (games), but have totally different taste. You are better off comparing it to Sh2 narrative, and RE1 survival. The game has a deep story, and the execution of the story telling is awesome. There is no mob areas like in RE4. If you have to deal with more than 2 necromoprphs you will be in trouble. You have to basically snipe, without a scope in close quarters, with limited run space. You have to solve some puzzles here and there, but nothing too difficult. I have finished this game several times. Biggest tip that I can give you, do not use a strategy guide. I didn't need one for the first run. If you are unsure, start in easy mode, that way you get the scares, you can immerse into the atmosphere of the game. Finish the game and then play in hard with the guide to complete the few things you might have missed. Is it just the right amount of length. BTW, between this game and the first movie Downfall, I have not been able to hear "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" without feeling creped out. Recently when I hear It I don't jump anymore looking for necromorphs. :) The second game is good, but gets more action. The 3rd is a lot more action. This is the best game in the series, and now DRM free
