Description
You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer on the spacecraft USG Ishimura. You're not a warrior. You're not a soldier. You are, however, the last line of defense between the remaining living crew and deadly reanimated corpses. The undead have become Necromorphs; horrific zombie-alien hybrids that won't succumb to traditional means. Fortunately, your offense is equally unique, as the high-powered mining tools at your disposal provide the means to fight against the threat.

Messy monster slaying.
The Necromorphs are unlike any enemies you've seen before. Headshots do about as much damage to them as flicking rubber bands. To survive, you'll need to dismember their insect-like limbs, one at a time.

Improvised weapons.
There aren't many traditional firearms aboard the Ishimura, but there's plenty of stopping power in Isaac's toolkit. Send horizontal or vertical blasts of energy at enemies with the Plasma Cutter, remotely control a high-speed sawblade with the Disc Ripper, and fill hallways with wide swaths of destruction with the Line Gun. Switch things up with alternate fire modes, and purchase upgrades to increase ammo, power, and reload speed.

Real-time attacks.
Whatever you do, don’t drop your guard. Everything takes place in real-time. That means any action you take, whether it be reloading or digging through your inventory, gives the Necromorphs a perfect opportunity to attack. This nightmare has just begun and it’s up to you to get to the bottom of what happened here.

Probably my favourite game ever!

I love this game so much, and I don't even like gory games in general! Everything about it is just about perfect, from the controls and movement, to difficulty levels and variety of enemies, and especially the Ishimura - it is literally the best space ship design in video games and feels completely real and practical! The weapons give you many options to play this game the way you want, and the starting weapon is definitely not some throw away pop gun - you can complete the whole game only using it! You get some suitable abilities to help you too, like telekenisis and time manipulation (somehow, don't ask!) that add to the fun, and destroying monsters with their own projectiles NEVER gets old! This game is around 10 years old now, and still holds up fairly well today visually, in fact I am still astonished that PS3 and Xbox 360 could pull these visuals off! Gameplay is great fun, and the locations are suitably creepy and scary, and the sound design, it sounds more like a movie than a video game! This game was heavily influenced by Resident Evil 4, and having played both I can say if you like RE4 you WILL love Dead Space, and once you're done, Dead Space 2 is even better!

Must have for all sci-fi horror aficionados!

For the most complete experience - make sure you watch animated movie "Dead Space: Downfall" before you play. And then just immerse yourself into the story and forget about sleeping lot next few nights. As long as you are into survival horror 3rd person perspective game with great atmosphere and jump scares, you are going to love it, and long winter evenings are going to dissapear extremely quickly. One of the best games in the genre. Pure unforgettable classic. PC gamers have to be aware though. There are parts of the game (mainly boss fights) more familiar with console world and although they might get frustrating a bit, they don't ruin the overall experience that much. One has to remember it is a port after all, and as such, doesn't fit 100% what PC gamers are familiar with. Some also had complained in the past about controls, but I had no issues with those and while not perfect, one can get used to them pretty quickly. Little caveat - I don't own GOG version, I used to play with fully patched DVD version of the game, so I imagine, some issues might have gotten fixed.

Sorta positive review with a point

This game is one of those recommended by many people and as a result it has a bit of a mystique surrounding it. As someone playing it the first time over the course of the past week, I can say that it follows a rhythm that repeats a lot and is a story that will probably not be too surprising. Now I am by no means a professional at reviewing, there are a few aggravations in this game that forced me to roll my eyes. The story is the standard mystery story involving a powerful artifact with an unknown past and a series of changing villains. The twist at the end is something that could be felt by anyone that has played a game like this before (Spec Ops: The Line). Moving on, the combat could be excellent but is hindered by the poor mouse control, as even with the patch from PCGamingWiki, it still is delayed and floaty. This probably is felt in the most hateful section of the game, the turret sections. In other situations, the combat feels complex until you realize that shooting one arm (appendage) and the opposite leg (appendage) results in a defenseless hunk of flesh. The trope of shooting a clearly labelled weak point on an enemy makes it feel like you're in a shooting gallery, to the point where you literally can play in a shooting gallery. With criticisms out of the way, I can move on to positives. The story is something that can still be moving to go through and helped by the overall atmosphere of the game. The station made it feel like running through an H.P. Lovecraft book with how crazy some of the enemies look. I also had so many moments where I was thinking "Oh crap, Oh crap, Oh crap" while running around trying to keep my health bar out of the red that getting out of sticky situations was very satisfying. Additionally, the upgrade system was very nice to use, with immediate feedback in the combat from upgrading weaponry and the armor. Overall, this is something that fans of the horror genre will enjoy and those that want a shooter may not want to play.

Creepy space shooter

2024 was my first Dead Space playthrough, and although I know there is a fresh remake, I wanted to experience the original first. Dead Space is a creepy 3rd-perspective shooter with unique weapons, clever enemies, and a fabulous "Alien"-esque horror environment. Actually, it is even more so "Event Horizon." This game is gory, with a clever kill system for the enemies, and loads of collectibles. It's got a meaningful upgrade tree, and a great inventory system where you can store goodies for later. It's a lot of fun, especially when the game spices things up with low O2 or no gravity. The kinesis and slow-mo powers showcase its indebtedness to System Shock 2. My favorite moments were the tense sequences with waves of enemies coming at you, since Clarke is not the most ninja-like of protagonists. You have to think quick on your feet since you can't "Doomguy" your way through this game. But there are some real imperfections in Dead Space, which I hope are worked out in the remake. It's really not that scary. A couple times you'll get caught by surprise from an enemy dropping through the ceiling or what-not, but otherwise this game could have used more atmospheric support, like the dark parking levels of Half-Life 2 E1, or the twisting levels of HL2's Ravenholm. Part of its lack of fear factor comes from its very linear level design. The game is mostly a "go here, get a thing, put it over there" type levels, so it really depends on the combat to keep things interesting. The tasks themselves are not particularly puzzling or interesting. Finally, I didn't get much out of the story. I hear the remake does more with it. The cultus and the backstory to Clarke lacked significant emotional resonance, seeming more like Mcguffins to give me a reason to move from room to room. In the end, I found myself wishing they had kept it more Doom-like and just foregone the story, focusing instead of the GTFO nature of the mission.

In space everyone can hear you stomp!

DON'T JUST READ MY REVIEW, WATCH YOUTUBE AND IF YOU LIKE IT GO FOR IT! BUT BEWARE OF SMALL ISSUES. Captivated by the DVD trailer of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," as well as magazines, what I would give to experience this from a blank start and memory. I would consult the PCGamingWiki for minor fixes, such as the Vsync-related door bug. Sadly, the game has been forgotten, and you are going to be the one to tweak and fix the game yourself; don't rely on EA. I'm not here for the remake. I am here for the OG Chad. Kellion go crash and from there it spirals out of control, (Kendra and Hammond) rely on you and your skills in: "Fixing stuff and stomping along the way."  Don't read that as they are useless; they have their uses but are purely background characters. You and you alone are the key to the ever-evolving locks that show up on each level and the coming story. Combat is what RE:4 should have been: "Move and shoot." The HUD itself is all-inclusive to your suit: health, stasis, inventory/map, compass, and likewise, ammo appears on your guns. When you open up the map, Isaac looks down; when you scroll through the menu, he moves his head—really nice details that add up. Audio is fantastic as are the logs, do a service and play with a headset. If you aren't careful, you can easily go through ammo/health/stasis. In the early stage you have to be careful if you are playing on higher difficulties. The environment itself is your friend and enemy if you let the enemy pin you in a corner and it hides valuabe items/ammo/nodes. You can exploit the game, but I am not here to do that and ruin your run; just have fun. Enemy variety is scripted but you get what you get for an older game; weapons are varied with upgrade paths with nodes that pushes for New Game+ and it its fun taking your stuff into the next run as a walking tank.  4/5 since the game needs some tweaking.
