You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer on the spacecraft USG Ishimura. You're not a warrior. You're not a soldier. You are, however, the last line of defense between the remaining living crew and deadly reanimated corpses. The undead have become Necromorphs; horrific zombie-alien hybrids that won't succumb to traditional means. Fortunately, your offense is equally unique, as the high-powered mining tools at your disposal provide the means to fight against the threat.
Messy monster slaying.
The Necromorphs are unlike any enemies you've seen before. Headshots do about as much damage to them as flicking rubber bands. To survive, you'll need to dismember their insect-like limbs, one at a time.
Improvised weapons.
There aren't many traditional firearms aboard the Ishimura, but there's plenty of stopping power in Isaac's toolkit. Send horizontal or vertical blasts of energy at enemies with the Plasma Cutter, remotely control a high-speed sawblade with the Disc Ripper, and fill hallways with wide swaths of destruction with the Line Gun. Switch things up with alternate fire modes, and purchase upgrades to increase ammo, power, and reload speed.
Real-time attacks.
Whatever you do, don’t drop your guard. Everything takes place in real-time. That means any action you take, whether it be reloading or digging through your inventory, gives the Necromorphs a perfect opportunity to attack. This nightmare has just begun and it’s up to you to get to the bottom of what happened here.
Dead Space delivers an engaging sci-fi horror story with an amazing atmosphere and some great visuals. Add to it the frightening music and awesome audio design, and you got yourself a fantastic survival horror game!
PS. Probably not for the faint of heart.
The comparisons to Resident Evil are inevitable, however Dead Space is superior to all the REs in two crucial areas: atmosphere and immersion.
Dead Space doesn't scare you. It makes you scare yourself. Everyone has different fears. The monster you don't see is worse than the monster you do. Left to their own imagination, most people will think up something worse than you ever could. The designers understand this and set the pacing accordingly. A constant barrage of monsters cheapens the fear and leads to monotony. Instead you can 15 minutes or more without encountering anything except the eerie silence and occasional clanking in the background. You freak yourself out as you're constantly checking around corners, waiting for something to pop out, but rarely does it. Play this in the dark after midnight with good surround headphones if you dare. Extra underwear recommended.
In addition, Isaac is not a badass space marine. He's an engineer, a technician. Nearly all the weapons you get are actually construction tools like plasma cutters, saw blades, and modified welders. You don't just shrug off damage. On higher difficulties, you can actually die if a monster severs one of your limbs, regardless how much life you have left. And you're all alone. Separated from your team early on, your only contact is over radio. No help is coming for you.
Adding to the ambience is the backstory you uncover through journals and audio logs scattered about the ship, or the scripted scenes happening at the periphery. Like System Shock of old, it all points to something wrong about the Ishimura. Luckily you don't have to fight the camera and controls like many RE games. There are no cheap scares or surprises just because the camera can't move or because you move and shoot at the same time.
This is a rich, satisfying story with difficult but fair gameplay, all racing to see whether you run out of time, health, or sanity first.
Is dead space any good? I own all the games (including the Wii game), the books, and the movies. Also the graphic novel. The best game is this one. Horror and racing games are my favorite, and Dead Space takes my #3 favorite game (SH2, and SH3 being #1 and #2).
While the game is compared to RE4 a lot for the over the shoulder camera, I think is comparing apples to oranges. Both are fruits (games), but have totally different taste. You are better off comparing it to Sh2 narrative, and RE1 survival.
The game has a deep story, and the execution of the story telling is awesome. There is no mob areas like in RE4. If you have to deal with more than 2 necromoprphs you will be in trouble. You have to basically snipe, without a scope in close quarters, with limited run space. You have to solve some puzzles here and there, but nothing too difficult. I have finished this game several times.
Biggest tip that I can give you, do not use a strategy guide. I didn't need one for the first run. If you are unsure, start in easy mode, that way you get the scares, you can immerse into the atmosphere of the game. Finish the game and then play in hard with the guide to complete the few things you might have missed. Is it just the right amount of length.
BTW, between this game and the first movie Downfall, I have not been able to hear "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" without feeling creped out. Recently when I hear It I don't jump anymore looking for necromorphs. :)
The second game is good, but gets more action. The 3rd is a lot more action. This is the best game in the series, and now DRM free
Reminds Me Of Alien/The Thing/Space Odyssey/Resident Evil 4 And Revelations 1,2 All In One
Played It On Ps3 And Loved It So Had To Get It For Pc When I Saw It Here On GoG.
Still A Great Game, Worth A Buy. As Is 2nd And 3rd Game
This is a gorgeous game even for 2008 and it has some of the best set pieces I've ever seen in any game. Finished it on hard and it was tough expecially with the kbm. I recommend going on pcgamingwiki for the recommended tweaks. They don't completely fix the mouse problems but they help a lot. Also if you have a razer mouse like I do, turn the in-game mouse sensitivity of and then adjust via razer synapse. That will give the mouse an even better feel. I really like what they did in combat as far as the limb severing to kill the monsters, makes it more tense and frantic. The lighting is amazing and the sound design is comparable to Alien Isolation , it's just top notch. I normally don't buy console ports because of their inherent mouse problems but I'm glad I bought this game because it is an absolute masterpiece.
