You are Isaac Clarke, an engineer on the spacecraft USG Ishimura. You're not a warrior. You're not a soldier. You are, however, the last line of defense between the remaining living crew and deadly reanimated corpses. The undead have become Necromorphs; horrific zombie-alien hybrids that won't succumb to traditional means. Fortunately, your offense is equally unique, as the high-powered mining tools at your disposal provide the means to fight against the threat.
Messy monster slaying.
The Necromorphs are unlike any enemies you've seen before. Headshots do about as much damage to them as flicking rubber bands. To survive, you'll need to dismember their insect-like limbs, one at a time.
Improvised weapons.
There aren't many traditional firearms aboard the Ishimura, but there's plenty of stopping power in Isaac's toolkit. Send horizontal or vertical blasts of energy at enemies with the Plasma Cutter, remotely control a high-speed sawblade with the Disc Ripper, and fill hallways with wide swaths of destruction with the Line Gun. Switch things up with alternate fire modes, and purchase upgrades to increase ammo, power, and reload speed.
Real-time attacks.
Whatever you do, don’t drop your guard. Everything takes place in real-time. That means any action you take, whether it be reloading or digging through your inventory, gives the Necromorphs a perfect opportunity to attack. This nightmare has just begun and it’s up to you to get to the bottom of what happened here.
Amazing sci-fi horror game with plenty to keep you engaged. You play engineer Isaac Clarke as he works his way through various sections of the mining spaceship Ishimura on what starts out as a repair mission, but turns into a mission for survival as he battles deadly Necromorphs that have invaded the ship.
The immersion is high given that most HUD elements are removed, so there are no distractions from the eerie atmosphere of the environments, including fantastic sound design. There are plenty of jump scares, so be prepared! There are some frustrating sections that may require multiple attempts to get through, but persevere and learn the tactics and timing that will obliterate your enemies and you will be rewarded.
I initially brushed off the Dead Space series as just bad horror games, because what can be scary when you can freeze it, cut its legs off, and bash its face in while it falls down in slow motion? My first actual experience of the series was the surprisingly good ios game, which made me realize that, while it may not be scary, it sure is fun. It wasn't long after I had the whole series on PC.
I can't help but think the idea for Dead Space came from the devs playing the Ravenholm level of Half-Life 2 and thinking "wouldn't it be cool to build an entire game around this?" They have the same basic premise: killing zombie-esque monsters with unconventional weaponry focused on dismemberment and using your surroundings, but with the variety and flexibility to keep it enjoyable for the length of a full game, rather than just one level. You have a telekinesis ability which lets you pick up and fling objects around, as well as a stasis ability to freeze stuff in place and a whole arsenal of weapons that will cut and blow up your enemies. The enemies are designed around the dismemberment mechanic with attack patterns that change or body parts you can pick up to use as makeshift weapons with telekinesis. You will fight in a variety of environments, such as zero-g where enemies come at you from all directions, or the external hull of the ship where no sound means enemies can sneak up on you easier, as well as a variety of more normal environments inside the ship. On top of that, the story is minimal, but solid. All in all, this is an extremely well designed game that is boatloads of fun.
Dead Space 2, while not on GOG, bears some mention because it is one of my favorite games. It takes almost everything Dead Space did and improves and expands upon it. The story is a little worse, but the characters are stronger. If you enjoyed the first game, definitely check this one out.
Disclaimer: I do not own and have only played a little of the PC version.
I've only played some but I've seen bits of walkthroughs and this game is great, much scarier than those boring walking simulator ''horror'' games. I recently played the removed mobile version on my device and loved it so I played some of this and it's just the kind of horror/shooter I enjoy.
Bought the Box-Version recently, but I guess the game is the same.
Graphics still do look nice although it is an quite old game.
Controls are ok, but Isaac moves slowly (Well it is no FPS so...). There are different weapons, but if you're good at aiming you probably can get along pretty well with the stadard weapon. But sometimes, at least in my case, you'll definetely need the big ones! You also have different quirks and most of the time you don't need them, but a few times, in different situations, they are essential.
Isaac himself doesn't talk at all and that makes this game even more scary (you will feel like completely left alone very fast, and this feeling won't go away since everything else there is hostile), besides the different sounds, animations, all the darkness, jumpscares and... oh.. these terrifying, disgusting mutants.
Further this game is not only about gore, it is also psychic horror since everyone there goes crazy and loses their mind and starts praying to something, except our quiet Isaac.
Compared to Outlast (took this one because its known widely), Dead Space is definetely more scary for me.
12/10 (Because I like sci-fi and those disgusting monsters)
Objectively I would say 8-9/10.
