Explore a post-apocalyptic landscape, solve puzzles, meet new friends and make powerful enemies, mediate conflicts and fight for your life as you unravel the secrets of the world around you.
Mark, a man out of time, searches for his lost brother Don, in a far-flung futuristic era ruled by highly advanced technologies which are both revered and reviled. Your surroundings hold echoes of a desolate past, and glimpses of a dark future that has yet to be written by your actions. Be prepared to face many tough choices that will shape this land long after you complete your journey.
The inhabitants of this world will help and hinder you, as you make new discoveries and navigate the spectacular African-inspired landscape. BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION is brought to you by THE BROTHERHOOD, the studio behind STASIS (Adventure game of the year 2015) and CAYNE.
Love the game, considerable step up from from the studio's previous titles. IF you enjoyed Stasis and Planescape Torment you will enjoy this one as well.
Totally unique and refreshing. Amazing, beautiful and disturbing art. Chill gameplay. Fun mini game combat. Wish this was sth more complex (like rpg ;p) but at the same time i totally loved the point and click simplicity :)
The devs put a lot of work into the environment and video sequences, but all in all this would have been better as a browser game. Either funds ran out for the rest of the game this way or it was meant to just showcase modelling with a "game" on top. Storytelling, interface and content is way below expectations and the use of Unity as an engine is a waste of computing power and disk space, when in the end you mostly have multiple 2D layers in 1990's SNES RPG style to run back and forth between again and again and again.
If you enjoyed Fallout 1/2, Sanitarium, or Planescape: Torment, this is the game for you. Immersive story, TRUE 3rd person/bird's eye perspective, isometric, and you mostly use your wits to get by instead of weapons or your fists. Not many puzzles, but choices definitely matter. I took a star off because the ending felt rushed or incomplete. I don't think the big question was answered. Maybe they're leaving room for a sequel? I hope so!
Despite being the largest game I've ever attempted to play on a 2015 MacBook Pro (13GB, yikes), it runs smoothly and looks great on the lowest settings. Thank you to the devs for keeping old computers in mind.
The premise of the game is really well thought out, with some beautiful world building and storytelling.
It does take a while to get into however and that is in no small part due to the clunkiness of the actual gameplay itself. You're mostly playing fetch, back and forth between a number of locations. And often you're left with little to no clue at all what relevance there is to an item you picked up, until you accidentally stumble across an interaction where the item is somehow used to create something new or access the next step.
Still worth 4/5 to me, since the narrative, visuals and potential for different choices and endings are strong enough if that's what you're here for.
