BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION is brought to you by THE BROTHERHOOD, the studio behind STASIS (Adventure game of the year 2015) and CAYNE.
" Heroes of painting style, prisoners of gameplay "
The game style is really great, but there is almost no gameplay.
Your task is to lick every corner of the map to obtain props and complete the task to drive the plot.
Oh yes, this may seem simple, but when implemented, it's not a feeling.
(I only played for 7 hours, but it feels like I played for 15 hours.)
No wonder this game went free. I am sorry because the atmosphere and the surroundings show that the devs worked hard on the game but it was all in vain. The thing about being the successor or other, much better games by the same people and the things that others mentioned ruin it all. Why do we have to go near to everything in order to see it? Why couldn't you guys just make it so it just plays as the previous games?
A shame.
The Brotherhood always wants to create a game that will tell us a fascinating story in really strange world. With Beautiful Desolation, they beat themselves. Another interesting plot, good mechanic and original wolrd of futuristic Africa is remarcable. Beautiful Desolation is a point'n'click game that bring addiction, while we want to explore more and more of that.
Strongly recommended.
Yes, graphics & sound are gorgeous, story is interesting and quite original too. It's an adventure game but the emphasis is on exploration, not so much puzzles - which are few and rather simple. similar to stasis & cayne. I bet the creators were trying for a new star control II without rpg or arcade elements, albeit the game feels more like star control III. Still this trip into the alternate future south africa is worth it!
If you crave some solid point&clicking you really can't go much wrong here. Stasis and Cayne, the previous games from The Brotherhood were already good games, but BD adds a the flavor of a quite unique world to the mix. Set in a future Africa it has great artwork and backgrounds and quite fascinating characters and lore.
You, your estranged brother and a mecha dog are transported from present day to a kinda postapocalyptic future where sentient robots and other weird species are abound. The voice acting is great and the south african accents add to the atmosphere. I especially liked Pooch, the robo dog, the voice actress is great and the audio effect they used on her voice really fits and sounds perfect.
Your quest in this intriguing world, is to learn how you got there and how to get back and it took me about 13-14 hours on my first playthrough (there are 4 endings (and one semi-hidden) based on the way you play in a light alignment system, so replays might add to that time depending on your interest). For the price asked that is a fair value for the money to me.
The game looks and controls similar to the Fallout games, the real ones, not the Bethesda junk, but let me be very clear, this is NOT an RPG !!!
Is it perfect, no, but for me there was not much that annoyed me, mainly at one point in the story you need to basically win a dice game to progress, and if you are unlucky that can get annoying (my first playthrough I won first try and wondered why people were complaining about the dice game, the second time I was not that lucky and yep, I understand now). Most other complaints I had were already fixed by patches.
