From original BATTLETECH/MechWarrior creator Jordan Weisman and the developers of the award-winning Shadowrun Returns series comes the next-generation of turn-based tactical 'Mech combat.
The year is 3025 and the galaxy is trapped in a cycle of perpetual war, fought by noble houses with enormous, mechanized combat vehicles called BattleMechs. Take command of your own mercenary outfit of 'Mechs and the MechWarriors that pilot them, struggling to stay afloat as you find yourself drawn into a brutal interstellar civil war. Upgrade your starfaring base of operations, negotiate mercenary contracts with feudal lords, repair and maintain your stable of aging BattleMechs, and execute devastating combat tactics to defeat your enemies on the battlefield.
COMMAND A SQUAD OF 'MECHS IN TURN-BASED COMBAT: Deploy over 30 BattleMechs in a wide variety of combinations. Use terrain, positioning, weapon selection and special abilities to outmaneuver and outplay your opponents.
MANAGE YOUR MERCENARY COMPANY: Recruit, customize, and develop unique MechWarriors. Improve and customize your dropship. As a Mercenary, travel a wide stretch of space, taking missions and managing your reputation with a variety of noble houses and local factions.
TAKE PART IN A DESPERATE CIVIL WAR: Immerse yourself in the story of a violently deposed ruler, waging a brutal war to take back her throne with the support of your ragtag mercenary company.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR 'MECHS: Use your MechLab to maintain and upgrade your units, replacing damaged weapon systems with battlefield salvage taken from fallen foes.
PVP MULTIPLAYER & SKIRMISH MODE: Customize a Lance of 'Mechs and MechWarriors to go head-to-head with your friends, compete against opponents online, or jump into single-player skirmish mode to test your strategies against the AI.
Please note:
3rd party Paradox account is needed to challenge other players in 1v1 multiplayer matches and to redeem unlock codes for Kickstarter Backer or Pre-Order DLC. Bonus decorations and emblems require online connection in order to be appliable.
A game that I continue to return to even after completing main campaign etc.
If you are a battletech fan, or like turn based squad / resource management games give it a try.
The career mode has some nice difficulty adjustments so most people should be able to make it as relaxing or as punishing as they wish. Just wish the score multiplier didn't max out if I want to really make my life painful.
So to start off with I am not going to focus on the SJW content of the game.
I was one of the backers for this game, super excited for it, and was just looking forward to a relative faithful game that followed the tabletop which I am also a fan of. While it does do a fairly decent job of being faithful to the tabletop, this is where problems start to begin. First off, you get a lance of mechs, that is it. Instead of being able to build your mercenary lance up to a company level, you are stuck with just four mechs. You can not even call in possible aero support or a strafing run to help you out in the fights, which was a feature that was discussed to be added.
One of the support levels was a custom drop ship that you could upgrade, do not bother to even upgrade it to be honest, it is way too expensive to do so, in c-bills then in monthly costs, you can swiftly bring up your operation costs just by doing so, which in turn is bad because you will need to have a lot of mechwarriors in order to fight in the higher levels, due to a single lrm hit to the cockpit means your pilot is out between 10-20 days. cockpit hits happen a lot if you fight against LRMs, which side note, are way way too powerful, a couple of lrm boats could potentially knock down an entire enemy lance and injure them/hit their cockpit.
Now lets move to how crappy this game runs. I have a brand new Alienware computer that is a little more than a month old at this point, it struggles with this game, the GPU running almost at max, CPU usage through the roof, etc etc. I have frequent crashes and freezes, heck even closing out the game causes it to freeze and not close out, requiring me to restart my computer.
Then the storyline, SPOILER!!!!
It is linear, you have no options to work for someone else, you can not say screw it and work for the uncle for instance, or help a house increase its influence in this nation/let them put a puppet on the throne, this was another failed promise.
I could go on and on
This game has a few quirks. It's not perfect in regards to story or interface, It's a tactical mech game with solid mechanics and challenging game play and an intertesting story. There is enough variety to mechs and missions that you can't use the same squad every time out (that laser boat may not be the best choice for a mission in a desert biome for example).
If you like tactical turn based combat and the battletech universe, buy this game.
