RafaelLopez: snip
Very nice. That indeed do the trick (even if I had to completely reinstall the game since after messing with the graphic mode that top menu bar didn't want to go away anymore). Thank you very much for that.

As someone has stated in another thread, one should avoid trying to change the in-game music setting as that will just lead to the game crashing for whatever reason. Otherwise it does seem to run rather well; better than the DOS version in parts, anyway.
Also, the sound effects tend to stop and start, particularly when using spells, the game slows down a bit when that happens. Haven't tried compatibility modes yet. Just a minor annoyance. Still glad we got the Windows version though! :D

Are you on Windows 8? I don't know if this is something about Windows 8, but I play UFO Enemy Unknown Gold and it hangs the game for anything between 1-5 seconds every time the music changes or when the music will restart. Perfectly playable, but I'd like to understand why.

This is on Windows 7, could be a similar issue, I've got no solutions yet. Have you tried compatibility settings, Setting it to run on one CPU Core or shutting down background tasks?

Hmm... I don't think this has to do with background tasks because the game never lags, this laptop is rare to ever lag with any app I have... now I never realised I could run it on one core. It does strike me as a compatibility issue. But I don't know how to do that.

RafaelLopez: But I don't know how to do that.
To set how many cores you want to use for an application in Win8 do the following: Open task manager, choose the 'Details' tab, find the game process and right-click it, click on 'Set affinity' ... which will allow you to turn of as many CPU threads as you'd like. That change will only be temporary though just as long as the game is running. Once it's started back up you'd need to do go through the whole procedure again. Not sure how to do that permanently in Win8. There used to be command tricks to do that in Win7, but apparently they may not work in Win8.

Just an FYI everyone. This is fully Win 8 compatible with one exception. You cannot play full screen. You have to play it windowed. That is as easy as running the game and pressing F4.

Have you followed RafaelLopez's advice? Worked splendidly for me and has the game running fine and dandy in fullscreen since.

Is there something wrong with the music? I can hear a beautiful and peaceful theme even in necromancer's castle. Did they really screw up the musics so hard in the windows version or what is is all about?

I did, but it kicks me out with an error when I try to actually load a map.

Hm. That's odd. Have you tried doing a fresh re-installation of the game and doing the fix before even opening the game? I had to do that in order to fix something else on my end.

I will try that. Thanks for the advice.

It's necromancer's castle theme from PoL. Death is meant to be peaceful :)

There is no way music could be misplaced as the track files are a clear CD rip (note track names in Music folder). Actually I switched to my rip files as they have higher bit rate (500kbps as opposed to ~128 AFAIR).

If you prefer original SW music, you can get it from from the links I've posted some time ago. You will just need to do some renaming, as track naming pattern changed.

I might write a batch file that will address this sometime in the future.
I will just link another thread about music problems on Windows version: http://www.gog.com/forum/heroes_of_might_and_magic_series/heroes_2_windows_version_can_the_music_resume_and_not_restart/post1
Maybe someone has a better fix than me :)
Bought HoMM 2 just for this and it works wonderfully, much better than my old copy on DOSBox. You guys at GOG are great!
