yasagani: Town music resuming is not normal Heroes 2 behavior. It is in Heroes 3 however! I think we can agree it is much better if we could make the winmm.dll resume town music, increase game atmosphere!
I completely agree with Yasagani. Even though in the official game town music was never resumed, it actually should. It's no wonder that homm3 and 4 had this feature by default. I swear I tested years ago a russian version of homm1 from a collection where music would continue for homm1 towns theme.

I have seen lots, a horde (speaking with game terms...) of internet posts and reviews about how the music in homm2 is great. But what's the point if the same first 10 seconds are played over and over?

is there a way to make this with a wrapper or something, at least with the windows version?

yasagani: Also with DOS version we cannot use Verok's amazing wrapper and the extra features like scalers and easy window mode. Windows version also has great performance without tweaks needed. The patch 2.1 hero movement stutter doesn't happen almost at all with Verok's wrapper!
Many Years ago I did some testing and yeah, I got similar issues.

I did these videos:

Demo: https://streamable.com/cbj2qs

POL 2.1 https://streamable.com/tz2oaf

in POL 2.1 There is a bit of stuttering when walking, sound lag when picking up resources, especially the campfire. Or when you click the end of the turn button, the sound would stutter.
In the demo version, none of this happened

I remember I messed around with vanilla versions of the games, and manually applying the official patches, turns out the same happened between patches 1.1 > 1.3 of the succession wars. 1.3 = stutter, 1.1 not stutter (most likely 1.2 was fine too, I can't remember)
I also installed the vanilla POL ISO (not GOLD and not 2.1 patched) the stutter problem was not present.
Also if I disabled the sound (i think even with the command line parameter) there was no stuttering.

Basically the very latest patches that updated both the successior wars vanilla game, and POL versions (from 2.0) introduced the problem. This might be the culprit (from the changelog):

"Music (CD Audio and Midi) part of the code has been cleaned up. The CD
Audio music error has been fixed.

The Music CD and Digital audio part of the code has been updated and
the video playback upgraded."

With the verok wrapper, these issues seems to have somehow been fixed, thankfully. Even though i think the hero "canter" movement is a bit faster than what it used to be?

Hey man, that's some great info! Unfortunately it seems like we may never get a fix for these issues, I gave up and so in the end I ended up playing the game using the fHeroes engine which is slowly becoming the best way to experience the game. I recommend you give it a try. It's not perfect but it's getting there and progress has been steady.

You get higher resolutions and the music resumes in every situation which is great.
Hello, thank you I might test fheroes2 then.

At any rate, In this topic there were older posts of moranms about a modified.dll which remused music from castle, but I can't find this dll, and apparently user moranms isn't posting anymore?

Also you talked about this acacia dll but apparently it wasn't the solution

The closest i get to fix the problem was using h2cdplay and the patched.exe (windows version of homm2 gold), but it was quite complicated to setup

It's a shame because it seems like a very easy thing to do...
