Hello to everybody !

There's another issue with HoMM II.
When trying to establish a multiplayer game the way it'sprompted on GOG support page we can get nothing but a fail.

Me and my friend have tried two variants:
1) run HaMachi and enter Host IP as it's given by Hamachi
2) run a game client without Hamachi and enter Host IP as it's given by an internet provider
all the other steps as described in GOG.com support instruction.

None of these variants has worked out.

As for the variant of HoMM we play - now in GOG store only one 466 Mb version available. When started it is played in DOSBOX. So we both use this very DOSBOX variant.

Do we need to switch to Windows version (if is still available) and if so - how can we get it ?

Windows version + hamachi works great although crashes from time to time. I recommend this combination. Contact me for info.

Establishing connection between host and guest without hamachi (forwarding ports on router and using internet provider's given ip) always fails in my experience.

I think, that using dosbox just throws another layer between game and network conection. Haven't tried it tho...
Mind that I'm referring to tcip/ip game. I think gog offers windows version as extra. Search this forum for more info if you can 't find it on your own.

The problem is that in GOG version we use (DOSBOX) TCP/IP is disabled so no chance to establish Hamachi connection.
We've got another HoMM II version (Windows) with TCP/IP active but we suffer the one and permanent issue while playing thru Hamachi with each other - once a Host player's hero comes to lower or right border of the game and is being attacked - the game crashes It always happens to Host player's heroes only and nearby lower and right border only. Thus we did hope that GOG's HoMM is free of this issue but we haven't had a chance to try it yet as we're unabe to connect to each other.

hmm.. I don't think this is issue with gog's version at all. It sometimes happens. Some event triggers game to crash. For example, I've had an issue with the map file itself. Had to replace it (from iso iamge 'maps' folder/or reinstall game). It would not render obelisks puzzle. Game would simply crash if you tried to view puzzle.

Also, when Ai attacks something or does something or you do something. This just happens. It's an old game... accept it.

In your case I would suggest this: try to load your multiplayer game as hot seat game and simply play/complete the move on your pc in multiplayer-hot seat, then save game and send a copy of saved game file to your friend. Then simply continue tcp/ip.
This would be the easiest thing to try out at first.

edit:
I think that you don't have to send save game file at all. Just start tcp/ip and other player will get all the data necessary.

That's exactly how we cope with it for years )) Just hoped there's an easier way.
Btw I've maneged to find a Win version of HoMM 2 here. Gonna test it in sense of crashimg along the borders ...

I bet you have win version form oldgames.ru .. he he he ;)

It might be that you could play unpatched POl version (2.0) or play simply Sw version... who knows if their more stable.
Let me/everyone know if you find a solution. :)
Unfortunatelly our issue stil exists. The GOG's HoMM 2 for Windows perfectly establishes a Hamachi connection but it still crashes when a host's hero is being attacked. Suppose it depends on a specific map (it happens on edited ,maps only) not on a game client version. Bad luck ...

This can happen in every map...

Personally I think that it is simply a bug that was not caught in development process.
Game exe was compiled from source code in 1996 / 1997 or whatever. After that - no changes. GOG simply re-packaged game and now sells it, so this error should be present in every game copy in existence. Since the source code is not available, this will never be fixed. However, if you're familiar with GL wrapper, then you know that it works wonders. You could try to send save game file to creator of gl wrapper (Verok).
I don't know how this stuff works exactly, but there might be a slim chance, that this error and errors similar to this, could be handled by including some code in dll file. It is worth a shot. That guy is a genius.
If you don't feel like it, you could upload save game here, and I'd contact him my self.

1. Мы запустили Hamachi... <...>
