The CIA, the NSA, the Russians, and the shadowy Third Echelon are involved in a complicated plot--and only Sam Fisher can straighten it out.

The first game of phenomenal action sneaking series Splinter Cell creeps onto the GOG.com catalog today for just $9.99!

Something is up in Russia, and it doesn’t look good. Rumors of shadowy deals, illicit collusion, and dark plans abound, so the US government turns to their secret “wet ops” specialists: the Third Echelon. You’re Sam Fisher, former retired SEAL and new member of a Splinter Cell, a secret government-backed team that exists in no book, has no paper trail, and is completely disavowed if you’re ever caught. You’re sent in to investigate some ominous rumors in Georgia, Russia, and you must succeed in uncovering the plot and saving the nation--or die trying. No pressure, right?

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell was an incredible arrival in the action-sneaker genre when it showed up in 2002: it had a fantastic plot that read like a techno-thriller from genre master Tom Clancy, the gameplay’s emphasis on light and shadow, high-tech toys, and careful planning interspersed with bursts of lethal action, and the impressive Unreal Engine 2 graphics all made this game a blockbuster success. Winner of multiple awards across a number of platforms, this initial entry in the series has all of the great gameplay elements that fans of the genre will love: Fisher’s acrobatic abilities to jump, mantle, and split jump; his assortment of lethal and non-lethal weapons, and the story that feels like it was ripped from today’s headlines--which isn’t bad given that the game is a decade old!

Save the America today for just $9.99 on GOG.com!

cogadh: Nice release, but sorry GOG, $9.99 is too pricey when there are no extras (not even avatars!?) and I can already get it much cheaper elsewhere ($5 on the discount rack in local "mega mart" stores). You really need to re-negotiate with Ubi over these prices, they are very unrealistic in their expectations and perception of the value of these games.

RafaelLopez: So you pay extra dollars for avatars? I roll eyes every time I see GOG publicizing the extras on all games, because besides the manual and some in-game map, nothing is useful to actually playing the game.
Absolutely not, but this release looks like it didn't even get a token effort at getting some kind of value added, not even pointless avatars. Of course the extras are not useful in game, that's not even remotely the point of them. They are simply there to add additional value/incentive to the purchase, the same way all that useless crap they include in collector's editions and special pre-orders is supposed to make those more valuable. At $9.99 with nothing extra, there is no reason to even consider buying this particular game from GOG over any other retailer.

Firek: stuff
I'm just wondering why there was no post by GOG about this release on Facebook.
Excellent game this, great series in fact. Recommended!

I agree with others that it's a bit overpriced (I'd expect SC 2 or 3 to be that price, not #1). But still a fun game to play, especially if you're into Thief etc.

billy13: Sorry for another moan, but....

Its already available (and cheaper £4.99 vs $9.99) on Steam, so what's the point ?

When GoG gives us releases like WC4 and Grimrock, they impress me so much that releases like this can't help but disappoint a little. I'm sure Ubisoft feel otherwise, but this is a $5.99 game.
In Australia it costs $20 on Steam, so I'm actually pretty happy with this price. I could probably find a retail version for less than $10, but it really isn't a huge investment.

billy13: Anyone who wants Splinter Cell has probably already bought it for less elsewhere.
That's a bit similar argument as "Red Dead Redemption should never be released for PC, because anyone who wants the game has already bought it for consoles."

I still don't understand why people moan about GOG releasing too many games. It doesn't even seem that these semi-new games really affect the rate of old, rarer releases on GOG either.

For what it's worth, I'm on a market for the older Splinter Cell games. I think I have avoided buying them so far because the original retail releases seemed to have some technical issues (like Starforce). I've sometimes contemplated about buying the retail SC bundle, but I couldn't tell from the box what kind of DRM or copy-protection they have.

I wasn't interested in renting the games from Steam either.

As it happens, I also bought Assassin's Creed and HOMM V from GOG, go figure. I didn't own them before either.

Anyways, I'm sure GOG knows the best how profitable to them it is to sell different kinds of games from different eras, and at which price points.

Elmofongo: uhh call me irrational but I refuse to play this game along with pandora tomorrow and chaos theory anywhere but xbox and/or xbox 360
Console elitist!!!1111! :)

Funny to think that I've never even considered buying any of the Splinter Cell games for my XBox. It just seems wrong to me, I don't want to hog our only TV for my gaming.

Googling for it, now I see some place selling e.g. this first SC game for XBox for around 20€ (so it appears I'd be still able to actually buy some retail XBox games somewhere). The PC version (retail, eXclusive) goes for $2.90 in the same place.

Uh. I submitted one but it appears it didn't take. Let me go and fix that.

Elmofongo: uhh call me irrational but I refuse to play this game along with pandora tomorrow and chaos theory anywhere but xbox and/or xbox 360 it just feels like a xbox exclusive I can't see myself playing this game with a Playstaition controller or mouse and keyboard

CaptainGyro: that's pretty damn irrational
Not THAT much. They were made for the Xbox after all, and a lot of times games feel best played as designed.

mushy101: Not only is it irrational, it's downright silly.

With an xbox 360 controller and a little work, you can make an xpadder profile for the game. Bypassing KB/M controls.

Elmofongo: yeah but I would rather play specifically chaos theory on the xbox especially playing splitscreen Co-op with my brother and I don't want to worry about the game crashing the computer
Chaos theory looks miles, miles better on pc, with proper support for higher resolutions then the xbox could ever do. For a small amount you play the game as the makers wanted it to look, stunning even now.

The muliplayer is active even now, with both coop and versus still alive and kicking. That isn't possible on the xbox version.

Sure you don't get local coop, but you get through online a whole view area and POV of your own, without the FPS drops and in much better detail.

Unless you have a hunk of junk from 2004, It won't crash the computer.
The fist Splinter Cell is good console-y fun, but I think the series do not become all that interesting until Chaos Theory, which is polished to the extreme.
I'm not buying this again, but this release has made me want to reinstall the game on Steam.

billy13: Grimrock represented a new direction for GoG - releasing brand new games ! There was a clear choice there and I chose to support GoG as a: They are the underdog and b: I wanted to support their new direction. They were also cheaper at $11.99 pre-order. A no brainer.

Now coming to market with a "new" release that is already available cheaper elsewhere, just makes them look out of touch. Anyone who wants Splinter Cell has probably already bought it for less elsewhere. Not the case with WC4 or Grimrock.

gm192206: I've heard "Everyone who wants this already has it" before, and I'm not convinced that that's how it works. I mean, yeh, by now all the people who passionately need the game in order to be happy have presumably already bought it; but there's space between "Want it enough to have looked for it on Steam" and "totally not interested"; I suspect that GOG makes a lot of its sales to people who haven't really thought about it that much one way or the other\--didn't like the latest one enough to hunt down the rest of the series, but hey, here one is on GOG, why not give it a try? Or, never bothered to play any of these games, but GOG has it on sale, and I do like stealth... Things like that.
I seriously re-buy everything on gog.com even though I most assuredly have it on Steam already!
I'll buy this just to show Ubi there's a market, so that hopefully they'll release Raven Shield and Athena Sword on here (Iron Wrath wouldn't hurt either). Gotta wait for my replacement cards to come in, though (got pickpocketed last weekend - more angry to lose the wallet than its contents).

I'm already having a blast with rainbow six 3 raven shield on steam especially with the raven shield 2.0 mod

I actually have all the Splinter Cell games on disc for PC, but I recently bought the first three over PSN for PS3 as they were going cheap. Decent ports, but definitely a game made for keyboard and mouse.
