Free Mars, or die trying!

Red Faction, a critically acclaimed and extremely revolutionary *wink* first-person shooter with destructible terrain and a close-range hard Sci-Fi setting, is available 70% off on GOG.com, as a part of our Red Faction 1+2 Bundle deal. That's only $2.99 for the first 72 hours!

You are Parker, a weary miner who works for the corrupt Ultor Corporation. You reside on Mars, sometime in the future, and when a plague spreads through the mining community, some of the Ultor employees uncover a massive conspiracy. Thus ensues a battle by a group of lowly workers, provoked to uprise by your own actions and to expose the deadly experiments Ultor has unleashed onto its work force. History will judge you. Make sure your faction wins, so its your people who get to write the history books.

Red Faction was a very big leap forward in the FPS genre. It introduced many new technical features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, destructible environment and more. The unprecedented (at the time) interaction with the environment creates a very strong feeling of immersion that is very impressive even by today's standards. With an engaging story to tell, a unique set of features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, operational land, sea, and air vehicles, advanced physics simulation, and destructible environment, it's safe to say the game well deserved all the critical acclaim it got.

Play your part in the history of Mars in Red Faction, for only $2.99 on GOG.com. The special 70% off release bundle offer lasts only until Friday, February 14, at 10:59AM GMT. The games are also available separately, 60% off.

tinyE: Far out. I have heard so much about these titles but I don't know actually know anything about them. :P My first impressions from the screen shots are very 'Half-Life-Esk'. At that price they sell themselves but anyone really bored want to tell me more about them, good and bad, before I fork over my money?

Yes I could read the reviews but the only GOG reviews I trust anymore are the ones for Keane.
Red Faction was really notable at the time for the GeoMod engine, which wasn't like anything that had been seen before. The problem was that the destructable terrain system was chronically underutilized. With the exception of one fight in the first 30 mins. of the game, you were hardly given a situation where you actually had to use it.

The game's weapons were boring, being a somewhat "modernized" take on the traditional gallery of FPS weapons. The texture palette was stuck on an endless pile of grey and brown, with many early environments just repeating the same modern industrial theme (because of that, it reminded me of Half Life as well). The plot, while being serviceable, wasn't anything to write home about (though in retrospect it's a reminder of what Chaser should have been, and failed to accomplish). With some exceptions, fights are a boring repetition of guards of various strengths. You later fight Mercs, who are basically just better armed guards.

So why buy it? Despite all of its failings, I found the game a fun, entertaining, mindless romp. Much like Painkiller, you're given an objective, and you're given enemies who stand in your way. You're given a bunch of guns, and you're pretty much told to kill anything in your way. (Mind the Medics, of course!) And that's really all there is to it. If you enjoyed SiN or Unreal, you'll enjoy this. If you're looking for something deeper though, look elsewhere.

As an FYI, the game runs perfectly in Wineskin on my MacBook Air running 10.9.1. (I used the Wineskin engines posted here: https://github.com/lnxbil/WineskinEngines/) - use of the Pure Faction mod (I'm using the 3.0c Beta patch) is highly recommended as it will let you play in fullscreen using modern 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions.

The only hitch is that you need to install dinput in winetricks to get the mouse to work properly.

I got it. At that price who cares if I like it? :P
Yay! Been wanting to play these. Thank you GOG!

I feel your pain. I've played around 20-30 games out of my 125+ GOG games.

Stalker series, Red Faction... GOG, if I knew any better, you were executing a Machiavellian plan to rob me of my money. For shame! If you can pop up Guerrilla on Thursday, well... my bank account will just have to take the hit.

Just when you think you won't be spending any more money on GOG, they come out with a great release or sale... Devious.
Nice! I always wanted to play Red Faction when it was first released, but it never happened. Wishlisted. Can't really get it now, just joined a gym which required the first two months up front. Hopefully this time I actually go. :)

I guess somewhere hidden in the game is one-kick ass FTP client...

Thanks. That's good to know. :D

I wish I had your backlog number, but all these amazing deals keep piling on the games.
I don't think I own any multiplayer games here on GOG (never tried them if I do) so excuse what is probably a dumb question, does this have multiplayer that works?

I own the game on the Playstation 2 and the GeoMod engine makes for a very fun time in multiplayer and if there is online multiplayer capabilities with this, it is an instant buy for me.

Well, it does, but you want to download Pure Faction for that as it's the only good way to play on the community maps, which is basically the only ones people still play on. Besides, they tend to be much more fun than the official ones.

As it is, I actually just installed PF this morning to give it a test run, and it works beautifully! I had a blast with the few matches I played. There may not be a huge crowd playing anymore, but it looks like there are enough die-hards to engage with. Add to that possibly (hopefully) a new influx of players through the GOG release and you ought to have a good time with it. ;)

There's a good reason why I so fondly remember this game because it still is one of the most fun FPSs in multi. Hell, I'd go as far as ranking it as one of my favorites alongside with UT '99. :)

I'm sure GOG has got a lot more aces up its sleeve - it's only the beginning of the year, and GOG's been hitting hard, first the STALKER series, now this, wonder whats gonna come next.

So your wallet can never feel completely safe.

Now, gimme VTM Bloodlines and / or Mafia The City of Lost Heaven (with the genius soundtrack!), update the patching system and give me more options to customize my shelf.

jamyskis: Nice. Good to see the old THQ back catalogue making its way here, albeit through a publisher that's already on board.

Red Faction 1 & 2 are already available DRM-free though (Gamersgate, retail). Will we be seeing DRM-free versions of Red Faction: Guerrilla and Red Faction: Armageddon?

And as someone else mentioned, Darksiders 1 & 2?

Saints Row was taken over by Deep Silver, so no chance of a DRM-free re-release there, and Homefront has been pulled from general distribution. Dawn of War is under the Warhammer licence, WWE under the WWE licence. Looking back through THQ's back catalogue, the amount of useless shit there makes it apparent why they went under - there really is nothing else from the past six years that isn't under a limited licence that is worth mentioning.
Forgive me for asking this, but I just like to know:

Was this game for the consoles of the time and just ported to PC or is it built for PC from the ground up?

The first two I assume were originally developed for the PS2 as the lead platform, and then ported from there on out. The lead platform is frequently the first to be released (not always, but with a release gap of several months, it's a safe bet).

Guerilla was a similar case, but PS3 and 360 were released together. I suspect in that case that 360 was lead platform as it was common industry practice at the time.

It's less clear cut with Armageddon, as the PC version saw a simultaneous release. Given that it uses a slightly upgraded version of the Guerilla engine though, I'd bet on 360 being lead platform again.

PC is the most difficult platform to optimise for owing to the diversity of hardware.

edit:
Looks like I misremembered. Red Faction started life as a PC title and moved over to the PS2 during development.
