Great underrated game? Or greatest underrated game? Not sure if it was on the site before this sale but happy to see it added.

The voice work and talent on this game really goes unnoticed, Emma Stone, Tom Wilkinson and Lucy Lu just to name a few.

What were your underrated pickups?

Landed right at the start I think.

Yep, it’s a great game, one of the better open world games. You might also like the saboteur, another great open world game but in WW2.
As for pickups, nope, nothing since November last year.
Underrated? You sure?
I don't think it is underrated at all. The game is rated very positively across the board.
There are games that are higher on my priority list. However, with the discount that is currently being offered is quite tempting.
I just completely suck at "fighting combo" games. Thus, I seem to suck at this game. Can't get past the opening "fighting combo" fights. Have no interest in trying over and over. "Fighting combo" gameplay just isn't my cup of tea.

Unfortunately, looks like I won't make it to the "cool open-world" part of the game.

Oh well, I tried...

Really, it’s real simple, just like the Batman games, but less attacking. Easiest method to win those is simply to wait to be attacked and counter (press y when someone flashes). That being said, there are several fight clubs through the game, none of which are required if memory serves, which get a bit harder, though you get loads more moves. There is he fighting in the main game, and it’s much the same, retaliate when attacked.

Looks like on the scale of suckiness, being "crap" is to be better at it than "completely sucks".

Scale:
"easy combo-fight gameplay, have no problems with it" <-- many players are here
..
..
..
..
"crap" <-- you are here
..
..
"completely sucks" <-- I am way down here. Possibly hitting the bottom of the scale. :)

Funny you mention the Batman games - I gave up on them real early too - for the same reason. :)

Sleeping Dogs has been on my "to play" list since it came out. Unfortunately since I prefer other genres, I think it might stay there forever. I don't doubt it's very good at what it is though.

Underrated pickups for me... I got Tyranny kinda late because people acted like it was a kiddy CRPG, but I actually thought it was great.
Bad North - charming RTT roguelite made by a Swedish team of 3 people

Stranglehold - John Woo HK modern action in game form

Aragami - stealth action with feudal Japanese setting (similar to MGS / Tenchu?)

Oriental Empires - Civ clone with ancient Chinese setting

The Saboteur - sandbox like Sleeping Dogs, but during WW2 Paris

Phantom Doctrine - XCOM clone set during Cold War

Hard West - XCOM clone set during the US Old West

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Japanese take on WRPGs besides Bloodborne, Dark Souls, etc.

Blackguards Series - Western SRPG (similar to King's Bounty? not sure)
- https://www.gog.com/game/blackguards_untold_legends_dlc
- https://www.gog.com/game/blackguards_2

There were a couple dozen other ones I bought and are still pending.
Gratutious Space Battles

Warhammer 40k Armageddon

Kohan : Immortal Sovereigns

Star Wolves

.....

not sure though about warhammer 40k armageddon, i belief it received some praise in some media, and i belief the local niche appreciation was quite all right, with the dlc and all, but maybe that counts towards all the games i mentioned.

underrated.... something the established criticism all decided upon worthy while the general public left those games outside their field either due to recognition or the release of a major player?
Sleeping Dogs is not that underrated I think. It just never got a sequel because the studio closed, unfortunately.

+1 to these.

Aragami is "exactly" like a classic Tenchu PSP game: Tenchu Shadow Assassins
Even if it's almost a copy paste, together with it's DLC about Aragami origins, it has it's own story.

-----

I have Oriental Empires in Steam, it's a great game. This one is indeed underrated, probably because of how combat works here. (Turn Based strategy+troop+terrain+morale+happyness of population calculation in encounters).
To be fair, though, the game doesn't explain much of how it works.

People compare it with Shogun Total War, but is nothing like it. The comparison with Civilization is much more acceptable and honest.

-----

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is also a great game with a cool original environment/story - underrated because CAPCOM. Hope this explains. The game came out 75% finished and they were trying to take a ride in Skyrim+Dark Souls hype.

Solid gameplay I'd say. Combat better than Skyrim, and deeper than Dark Souls series which became a Dodge Roll feast after Dark Souls 1. (Dodge at the right time = Win).

-----

I'd also like to recommend Sundered: Eldritch Edition. An awesome Metroidvania with Roguelite and RPG/Skill Tree elements focused on exploration and combat. Combat here is better than in Hollow Knight, imo, as you have directional combos and you can use some "tricks" to get at places you wouldn't be able to. It's a shorter game, compared to Hollow Knight, though. (10~15 hours)

A girl named Eshe got out of her village (reasons unknown), and, by walking in a desert, she's pulled by a dark force inside an acient technology base by an entity called Eldritch which offers her his powers so that she can escape. To do that, you need to collect Shards of said ancient technology to help Eldritch - or, to destroy them.

There is a choice here: You can Resist Eldritch orders and so, start to be resisted by him too, or Embrace Eldritch powers and become stronger, but, lose your humanity in the process. I cannot go further as this would be spoiler. The story is simple, with multiple endings but it's well done imho.

----

Cyber Hook is the one of, if not the best First Person Platformer for PC right now. Together with Mirror's Edge (which is not underrated, I think).
You wake up in a digital/tron-like world which you need to escape, but to escape you need to complete challenging platforming levels to help your friend to gather the data needed for said escape to work.

For this, you have a grapple hook (Have you ever imagined being Spider Man in a Digital/Tron-Like world?) which you use to gain speed and reach higher places.

The story is just an excuse, really, but the game is excitingly fast with multiple ways to complete the levels.
This game is heavily focused in Speed Running, so there's a worldwide leaderboard ingame that works without Galaxy.
You can compete with your own time, your country best time and world best time, per level.

(Warning: This game contains heavy lights of various colors, fastest movement I've seen in a first person game and blur - a lot of it - so beware if you have motion sickness or something like it. BLUR can be deactivated in the settings though, so this helps.)

Batman Arkham series fights are much easier if you use a lot of Evade moves. Basically you just double-tab the spacebar very often and land a hit whenever you see a good opening. As long as you are performing an evade (jumping above an enemy) you can't be attacked, and you don't lose the combo.

That's the basic of mowing down mooks. After you get that pinned down you start incorporating other moves like takedowns, cape stuns and gadget attacks. After I started playing defensively like this I had no problem reaching 130 hits in a single combo — in fact I would usually run out of targets long before I reach that number.

Give it a chance again, because if you manage to get better at it the games are well worth it.
