Yeah Sleeping Dogs was amazing. I did also struggle with the combat at the beginning since the counter isnt always responsive but its still alot of fun and decently deep. You can also “cheese” hand to hand combat once you unlock the leg break move in the dojo since against any not wrestler enemy, you can leg breal, get behind and double square to knock them out instantly.

I love SD’s gun combat however. It rewards vaulting and moving around by giving slow motion and disarming through vaulting or running up to the enemy and disarming gives more points. Story was also pretty good and wish they made a sequel.

The only “similar” game I can think of is the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series. Deeper combat and a good story although Yakuza is far more minigames and the kareoke is much harder.

I thought that Yakuza looked like a good series after I finished Sleeping Dogs, and was excited when I started Yakuza Zero but the transition every time a fight starts just breaks the immersion for me and was kind of disappointing.
I also got into the Yakuza series and played Kiwami and Zero (currently working on plating zero but life is getting in the way).

I do think based on my experience with both, the game’s enjoyment comes more from the story and the variety of minigames/stuff you can do with combat being a nice plus. The combat is decent but most encounters become counter/tiger drop spam when you unlock the move. I do love Yakuza Zero’s cabaret minigame but hate the kareoke or arcade games. Yakuza is also a great game to remind me why i hate gambling lol.

I do wish Sleeping Dogs got another chance with a sequel but that ship has sailed.
I'll argue for two of my older favorites, Hexplore and Tachyon: The Fringe.

Hexplore is an action oriented puzzle game set in a "medieval" magic type setting. Fun with a good soundtrack. Likened to Gauntlet.

Tachyon was a space combat sim with Privateer elements with complete voice acting by none other than Bruce Campbell.

Some great stuff out there.
