Blizzard Entertainment and GOG.COM have teamed up to rerelease select classic Blizzard games, beginning with Diablo®, Blizzard’s legendary 1996 action role-playing game that introduced players to the harsh—and deeply rewarding—world of Sanctuary.

The original Diablo® is available now via digital distribution for the first time ever on GOG.COM. Players looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.

Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, and a host of bug fixes. Players can choose either version of the game from a launcher.
Let's save this for the next "GOG doesn't release good old games".

This was also one of the "never gonna happen" games, so it's looking better for other lost classics. I assume this is the secret intel that elcook hinted in another thread. ;)
A question for GOG:

Some of Blizzards Classic games have been released for free on Blizzard's Website (Blackthorne, Rock N Roll Racing, etc):

- Would those games be made available here free as well?

- Would they be made available at a price? (to cover getting them to work on modern systems?)

- Ore are they exclusive to the Blizzard Website?
Can someone test both versions on Linux via WINE?

I read, that it also contains an unchanged version that should still be compatible with the mods (like the real HD mod that isn't just upscaled), can someone test it with Beelzebub?

Fuck me sideways...I never expected to see this here.

And "...rerelease select classic Blizzard games..."?
GOG outdid itself. Again...
You guys rock!
What on earth?

How?
Diablo is one of these games that was all my life around there somewhere but I never really got to play it. Well, it's about to change !
While I'm more excited about the same fact of releasing Blizzard's game on GOG (and that first Warcraft games are coming) than about Diablo's release itsellf, I've got to admit - it was the only game in the series I've ever finished (I was bored with D2 and never feeled necessity to try D3).

I'm a bit sceptical about first Starcraft release (original version/Remastered - doesn't matter) though - for me it seems like Blizzard figured out that titles which they're not planning to "remaster" would be a good option to release somewhere "outside" their platform - so while Warcraft 1 & 2 (maybe Lost Vikings and other "oldies" also?) seems to be quite obvious (but still welcomed!) addition, I'm not convinced about chances for Starcraft.
Instabought!
I used to play the hell out of this some years ago. To the point that the CD exploded in my disc drive..

Like everyone else, I am thoroughly surprised to see this here. Great job everyone!
Hopefully this silences the "GOG doesn't care back old games anymore" crowd - at least a few months. It feels like anything is possible now that a Blizzard game has made its way here.

Some people are talking about this in the Diablo sub forum here on GOG so you may get more info there.

gandalfnho: Nice, very nice surprise. I still have my CD-ROM, but always wanted a digital backup. What about Warcraft 1 and 2 (and expansion) in the future, considering both titles aren't available digitally yet?

Prah: They are semi-confirmed to be released here next.
warcraft 1 and 2 ? 'ancient games'.... i think i have one of them on cd

edit;: it's WC II + expansion

Ixamyakxim: Imagine that in this day and age!
Coming from a flight simming background, i can inform you that this is quite normal in the FS genre; there are a number of companies that have been developing payware addons (aircrafts, sceneries, utilities etc) for decades. These payware addons can sometimes cost more than the price of the base game and almost always are worth it since they improve the experience tenfold. Having said that, even though i must have payed more than $100 just for FS2004 payware addons (and that's because i also make use of freeware addons) plus a good amount of donations to racing sim content creators (mostly on GPL) and other misc software creators, i wouldn't consider paying even a mere $5 for some Warcraft maps. :P

MartiusR: ...
I share your sentiment, GOG is like a dumping ground for AAA companies where they can unload their old stuff they don't play on remastering.

As for Starcraft, get this: when I re-installed the game from my CD it was downloading a several GB large update. As it turned out, it was downloaded all the content of the remaster, and when you buy the remaster all it does is just unlock that content. Is it too much to ask for in this day and age to just leave the classic games alone?
A wonderful surprise and a great game. I never thought we would get to see Blizzard on GOG. Hope to see my personal favorite, Warcraft 2 soon. :)
