Drelmanes: Well, this sucks. It's not like the games here are too expensive, or have evil DRM. But, it's hardly surprising.
If a program was distributed on the web and the program had a copyright on it, DRM or no DRM it would be still be downloaded. If the program cost $200 in the store, it would be alluring to one who does not want to pay $200.00. However, there is still honest people on this earth that will pay the $200.00 and kudos to them.
I believe that even if someone made a program/game and gave people money for downloading it from his site, some people would still pirate it.
I once felt like replaying Duke Nukem 3D and as my CDs are long lost, looked it up on Usenet. Downloaded what turned out to be the GOG version. Unbeknownst to me, the game was on GOG, so came here and bought it instead. Hooray for Usenet!

Yeah and everybody that pirates windows are so dishonest. F..k that ...If you sell a good product it sells well no matter the pirates.

stonebro: GoG is seemingly facing very little piracy. Very few of the games are available on torrent sites, at least.

If anything it's more proof that the GoG model really works.
Let's get this out of the way.

This is really, really not true. I know of several sites that have the *entire* GOG collection available, and they still get added to whenever a new one comes out. It's out there, and it's being pirated.

Was it condemned? Yes, in the beginning especially, which is a good sign for Gog certainly, because it shows they have a lot of goodwill. However, since then it's basically gone and changed. It's not really condemning anymore, you just see people who say that if you really like the game, or end up liking it, buy it on Gog, or heck, you see a lot of people in those places actually *say* they already bought it on Gog.

But don't be fooled, these things are being pirated far more than they are being sold, I have no doubt about that. However, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it's probably helped them with added exposure and the quality of the installers. Some people will pirate, regardless of anything, and now they're pirating the GOG version rather than the older versions out there. However there's also people who see the low price on Gog and are now simply getting it legit from GOG.

Long term, I'm not really sure what it'll do to GOG, but for now, I'd say it leaking into the pirate scene has probably done more good for them than bad.

gameon: Piracy isn't good for any of us. Think about it, we've paid money for our games that others are getting for free elsewhere.
And I rest my case ....

uulav: Your thoughts about this picture?
I just purchased quite a number of games a couple of days ago from GOG. My thoughts on that picture???

I'm gonna purchase a couple more right now.
Piracy dosent help us much but sadly people will do it for the sake of doing it people want things for free even though gog prices ae really good.

Is it any wonder all the big companies use the piracy as a way for them not to release games on the pc.

By law. Piracy is a crime in quite a few countries.

You may have your economic/moral reasons to pirate (which ill never agree with). Still, its illegal (and in some countries, a crime).

To be honest, the fact that GOG games also get pirated a lot just confirms my point: price is just a lame excuse for piracy. Pirates will pirate no matter what, no matter how good or how cheap the game is. They dont care, they dont give a fuck, they want to get it just because its free and they feel they dont have to pay for it. "Why pay for it if i can get it for free?". Its just too selfish. Seriously, if someone cant spend 5,99 dollars on a fucking GOG game (which usually drop to 2,99 dollars on deals) how did he afford a PC to start with?

For Christs sake, even 1 dollar iOS/Android games get pirated. Now, point me one iPod/iPad/iPhone/Android user who cant afford a 1 dollar game. Those are pretty expensive devices, 1 dollar is NOTHING for those who own such devices. Yet, they pirate. They do it because theyre way too selfish to shell out 1 dollar when they can get it for free.

Thats why i dont buy that "oh, im so poor i cant buy my games, so i pirate" BS. Not like games are necessary goods like food or water.

If it wasn't Piracy, then the publishers would think of other scapegoats, they always do

With PC it's Piracy (even though piracy is very widespread on consoles as well) with Consoles it's the used games market

So? I don't know if you get my point.

sajin: GOG was born at piracy hell country Poland to overleap such problem by DRMFREE.
And the fair prices (IMO), the free soundtracks, artworks, etc.
The Witcher 2 got pirated 4 or 5 times more than it sold. it still sold over 1.2 million copies. i don't think GOG is gonna worry about a few pirated GOG games...

besides, this is neither shocking nor new. if anything, i'm surprised GOG games aren't getting pirated on a wider scale considering how easy it would be.

Guy has job and can afford PC and games and buys them.
Guy gets laid off, fired, serious illness, ect.
Guy can no longer afford games as he has to take care of bills, but he still has the computer from when he could afford things.

Also, they could have been given the computer for free.

Not hard to imagine a scenario in which someone can't afford games but has a computer.

Hey sounds like me! I haven't been able to buy a single game from GOG yet, I just enter giveaways and hope I win

GOG once called me a pirate, then they took an update to the knee.

fucked up logic here. you could attempt to rationalize pretty much any kind of theft with that kind of 'logic'.

fact is the games on GOG cost money. you want them, you have to pay. if you don't pay, you're stealing. stealing is a crime. end of story.

besides, it's well-known that the cost of games is not the reason for piracy. hell, the friggin' indie bundles get pirated, and you can get them for 1 cent. Call of Duty costs $10 more than any other newly released game, and it sells up to 20 million copies in record time.
