MonstaMunch: Sorry, looks like I'm late to the party and only managed to read the first 5 pages.

Did I read wrong, or were people really suggesting that when someone can't afford to feed themselves, they should be playing pirated video games instead???

>.<

jamyskis: Glad you mentioned it because I was worrying that I was going to get lynchmobbed for mentioning just that.

I mean, if people can't afford to feed themselves, where's the internet connection coming from? I don't recall any telecom company providing DSL internet for free.

Of course, it's also apparently difficult for some to comprehend that there are other worthwhile and low-cost pursuits beyond sitting in front of a PC. Like...going for a walk, reading, drawing, or even just watching TV.
Actually you are wrong. In the city I live there is a municipal free wi-fi network. It is not good on speed, but still it's free :)

Well, if your countries are in such a crisis that you cant afford video games, you could always join us Australians

timppu: I used to know some people who were big into this whole piracy thing and never felt any remorse for getting everything free. In fact, it even felt they couldn't understand why anyone would want to pay for any of it, be it music, movies, (PC) games etc. Oh well, I never tried to explain them either.

Ps. They were not poor people, they had steady jobs, one even owned a big house (not apartment) and was doing well in construction business. Their brains were just built that way that everything should be free.
Most people i know are like this. They think they just have the right to get the game/song/movie for free, and charging money for it is absurd. Such mentallity makes me sick. Piracy is a huge problem here in Brazil, thats why most companies dont even dare to invest their money here (even though this is changing, Microsoft is doing a really great job on getting their games released here completely translated to brazilian portuguese and for a good price, Sony and Nintendo are starting to do it too). Yeah, there are a lot of poor people. But this isnt the main reason for piracy, in my opinion.

Poor people are not the ones who will buy a gaming PC or an expensive console. And trust me, these things are MUCH more expensive here than anywhere else in the world, as a matter of fact, we got the MOST expensive iPad on the world, it costs more to buy an iPad here than to make a trip to US and buy one there, and im NOT kidding, this was actually proved. As an example, a PS3 costs arouind 650 dollars here. Do you really think someone who spend 650 dollars on a console wont have money to buy games later? Of course theres no way to buy every new AAA release in stores, as these are priced around 120 dollars, but there are always alternative ways, you dont have to resort to piracy if you dont want to. I get my games really cheap by buying them second-hand or from ebay and play-asia. I rarely ever pay more than 25 dollars for a game, unless i cant really wait for it and want it on day one or its a really old classic. And for PC its even easier, as digital download services are filled with amazing deals.

Thats why i cant see prices as a way to justify piracy.

GameRager: ]I am trying a bit to converse and debate rationally, but for some reason some here just keep up with spouting the same generalizations on both sides. :\

Now I don't expect anyone to change their core beliefs, but when shown that PART of those beliefs is incorrect you'd think they'd at least acknowledge that.....but no, most don't. Then others come in and post the same generalizations, either not having bothered to read the prior replies or (possibly) for the sake of acting purposefully dense to allow them to continue to use and hold faith in such generalizations.
And in my opinion youre being way too arrogant. Youre just mad because not everyone agrees with you. In a debate, you have to expect that not everyone will agree with you.

Bullshit. What he's saying is true.
You came in here saying "If people can't afford to buy games, how do they have a computer?!?! CHECKMATE!"
Then people explain to you how that would happen, and then you sprout the same bullshit again in a later post, ignoring what was explained to you, then decided to post it once more in this post for good measure.

You are a prime example of someone who is not acknowledging that something you believe is false.

What he really meant to say was:
"Piracy == Theft. DEAL WITH IT. Although, honestly, I just wanted to see if anyone would decipher this. I really don\'t care."

It's not a cipher :p
(Yes I know it's a late response, but I only just saw it. (5 minutes ago))

Edit: I doubt you wrote it though, you didn't properly escape the apostrophe which sounds like you simply input some text and it spat out the code. Not that I can code in this particular language either :p

Vestin: If there's one thing I dislike more than directionless, fallacious arguing, it's smug guys implying a medium makes communication irrelevant.
It's not the "where" that's wrong. It's not the "what" either. It's merely "how". If everyone here had focused on a single issue, adhered to basic rules of proper reasoning and respected all others, not getting carried away by emotions... we would have reach plenty of simple conclusions shortly, in addition, perhaps, to some conditional statements hinging on veracity of some key premises...

But - no. It's a lot easier to go "Hurr durr - postmodernism, pointless bickering, Interwebz" :|.
So what you're saying is that if everyone had been completely mature and logical they would all have agreed with me. I like your angle!

Of course i wont change my opinion about that. No one posted an argument convincing enough. People just come up with exceptions, like "imagina that poor boy from a poor country who got his PC from charity", blablabla. My friend, exceptions just prove the rule. Yep, there are exceptions, to every rule there is an exception. But i still firmly believe that at least 95% of those who can afford a gaming PC can afford games.

So, the guy who has a 100 dollars GPU and cant afford a 5 dollars STeam/GOG game. Oh yeah, right.

Also, as a guy above me alredy said, starving people probably have other more important things to do other than pirating games.

And youre just as arrogant as he is. Prove that what i believe is wrong. Just do it. With facts please, not with arguments out of your ass.

Neobr10: ....
Oh cripes, there's charities in my city that give away old hardware should you be willing to learn how to use it (which involves wiring it together and installing a free OS on it). Charities like that exist all over the world.

Besides, computers provide more than just access to games and cheap internet porn. They're a fairly useful tool and many families even in poor countries will find the means to obtain something like that. Others will borrow or time-share access in a small group, or even pay for access in some sort of cafe.

I don't know what went on in the 15 pages before and I'm not going back, but if you're maintaining that the PC is some sort of luxury item and not frequently owned by the very poor, you're wrong. Yak herders in remote regions have solar powered LED lighting now days and some guy in Afghanistan built a solar powered 3D printer that uses sand as an input and extrudes some sort of glass substance.

My point wasn't that internet costs money. It's that if you can't afford to feed yourself, maybe you should be using that free internet to try and find a job instead of torrenting games.

Not to you. Though I could be wrong.

Anyway, who's to say they aren't trying to find a job? Also there are people who work and are poor.
