New release: Time Commando

Fight your way through time or you’re history!

Play a fantastic action-adventure title with a unforgettable plot with today's release of Time Commando for only $5.99! An advanced virus has infiltrated a top secret military research facility's supercomputer. The computer can simulate any combat from any period throughout history, but it's such a powerful computer that the virus has created a vortex that threatens to tear a hole in the very fabric of time. Your job is to suit up, travel through time, and prevent the virus from destroying the universe. A good antivirus program could have prevented this threat to the universe, but now that the virus is assaulting the fabric of reality, it has all come down to you.

You are Stanley Opar, a member of S.A.V.E (Special Action for Virus Elimination), an organization that was created to clear the system of the virus. You must travel through many of the historical eras that the supercomputer simulates while using a wide array of weapons (from stones to samurai swords, slings to laser rifles, and a killer yo-yo) to fight through time and collect data bits scattered over the various worlds to repair the damage done.

Time Commando is an action adventure with a little bit of puzzles here and there. Graphically the game was very advanced for the 1990s with beautifully rendered 2D backgrounds coupled with the vivid 3D animated characters. The control scheme takes the best elements out of the Alone in the Dark series and improves upon them.

Grab yourself some action-adventure brawling action for only $5.99!

Thank you so much gog!

Sweet! This is another one of those games that was on my "To Play" list, but I never got around to picking it up somewhere. Thank guys!
80
Made my day when I saw it released...

Must have completed it about 25 times as a kid
81
I remember I always wanted this game on the Playstation but I could never afford it and later on i forgot the game since so many other amazing games came out. Might have to pick it up now and see what I missed out on
82
Offtopic: so no weekend promo this week huh?
83
One of my favorite non-dos games. I still have the cdrom, but i will be picking this up asap. This is what i call a good old game.
84
Great news! Have many good memories about that game!

One of the most underrated things about this game was definitely the great music by Philippe Vachey at the beginning and end of the game. :-)
85
Holy polygon hell Batman!

I was just about to ask this as well

I suppose they are skipping it this week because so many people are burned out from the Christmas sales
87
I guess but they could have balanced it out with a 75% discount. I bet many people would scrape together 1,5$. :)
88
Yeh, but they'd have needed a publisher that was willing to let their games be discounted 75%.

I have a hard time calling a game that most people here have not heard of before now a
"Classic" or "A game that you have to play to be a real computer gamer". If you want to argue that is is forgotten or ignored gem of a game, fine, but let's keep the hyperbole down.

I played the game back when it was released. I don't recall exactly why I wanted to buy it, maybe some local gaming mag praised it and got me interested.

In the end, if felt a bit gimmicky game to me (the main achievement apparently was that the scrolling background was FMV, and the polygonal characters moved over it), but apparently it was interesting (and easy) enough that I even completed it. Because of the FMV backgrounds, it was also quite linear IIRC. I think there were some things I quite liked, maybe the start menu music was very nice, or there were some funny moments in the game.

I happened to dig the game CDs out two months ago to see whether the game still runs on XP, which it did. I didn't get an urge to replay it though.

Delighted to see this. As a child, I was more than a little in love with the LBA games, but I never had the chance to play Time Commando. A decade and a half later, I'll be happy to. :)

I still have this game on CD somewhere, and now I have it on GoG as well. I was positively surprised when I tried this game the first time. First as a demo, and then the full game. I think I have played it through 2 or 3 times. The demo at least 4 times.

Some people complain about games being too short, but I would much rather complain about games that are 5-20 hours too long, just wasting my time, instead of a short game, that I might even like to play through a few more times, because it was fun playing it.

I also really liked how many different kinds of enemies there were, and you had to adjust to different tactics between different enemies, and the controls were quite good compared to other games at its time. A game like Alone in the Dark had the controls from hell. It was impossible to aim with guns, and if you missed a short, you would probably have to reload the game, otherwise you would not have enough bullets to get through it later on.

This game was much better at going into to the 3D genre, without letting it ruin the gameplay like so many other games did at the time. They also made Little Big Adventure, where they had much the same, with controls that were better than other 3D games, although LBA could be frustrating with its controls at times. Just like this game could be as well.

Time Commando is very linear compared to Little Big Adventure. I also like time travel, so its fun to see how they did the different time periods. I was surprised to see how many they had done, although the game can probably be completed in two or three evenings. Maybe even one if you are good.

But I can recommend it. I guess today something like Devil May Cry would be more entertaining, but this game is where those games got their inspiration. In the genre of Devil May Cry and similar fighting games.

And I think of it as a classic, because in the gaming industry it did more than just sell a few copies. It showed a better way of doing this kind of game, with better graphics and controls.

Skunk: Well, this is certainly a good way to bring in the new year! Now, if the weekend sale manages to have some games I didn't get in the holiday sale for 75% off, I think I'll have a very good birthday this Monday. :)
I did not see any sales for 75% off during the holidays? Just 50%?

Some gem promos go that low I think, or close to it.

Wishlisted for sure, played back in the day.

A great game if you do like history and adventure, of course it's not that deep...
but it's a relaxing game going through different eras and civilizations; I like it for that alone. :)
