Glad to see Puzzle Quest on GOG!

This is a re-release with higher textures, a bit of touch-up, and some extra content. If you're curious about what's new in this version, this is what I've been able to notice: - The mana tiles have been reworked to also have unique shapes instead of just colours for accessibility - A new class (Swordmaster) - 'Mana drain' has been reworked into 'Mana Storm' - instead of draining all players' mana, the board is wiped and the mana on the board is distributed evenly between the two players - New items - T and L shapes count as a '5-of-a-kind' move instead of a regular move - Lucky matches - depending on your stats, you have a chance of getting a bonus move on any match (e.g. high air mastery means you get more chance to get a bonus move on matching yellows) Match 3s are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, so Puzzle Quest is the perfect way to play a Match 3 game with a bit of meat to it. This game has a surprising amount of content and depth, so if you like RPGs and Match 3, this is the perfect game for you! This version seems to have eased up a little on the enemy AI, and random events such as 'no more moves' are less punishing, instead distributing all mana on the board randomly, instead of wiping current mana. It should be noted that this version does not include any mutliplayer and has less portraits than prior versions, but these changes are not really enough for me to rate the game down, but it would be nice to see them added in the future. Would also love to see the rest of the series come to GOG eventually!

The Best Match-3 Ever Made

While I haven't played this version of Puzzle Quest, I've played Puzzle Quest on PC and PSP enough to know it's the best match-3 game bar none. Before Puzzle Quest, match-3 games were purely Bejeweled and its ilk - casual games with little purpose. Puzzle Quest gave actual game mechanics and purpose to the matches, turning every match-3 battle into an abstraction for an RPG activity - whether it's fighting, casting spells, crafting, taming a monster or something else. And it works -- it really does work. The game is enthralling despite being a little bit repetitive. There are always some more combinations of spells to try out and some more things to do. Towards the endgame, it gets kinda crazy and overpowered, but it's still fun, and it helps that there are multiple approaches and spell combinations to go for. When Puzzle Quest came out, I thought the game was amazing, but that it would be fleshed out even further by its sequels, making it feel even more like a full RPG experience. Strangely enough though, nobody's been able to replicate the experience of the original Puzzle Quest. Its sequels and spin-offs failed, and while there's a genre of free to play Puzzle Quest-likes on phones, they don't seem to create the same level of engagement, or perhaps their 'play until you run out of credits' design limits them. It was lightning in a bottle.

pretty good

It's the original game with some small changes. Worth the low price, but it's nothing amazing.

Worse than the original

Puzzle quest is the best puzzle game of it's kind. However this version is worse than the original one. It is a good game, but a pretty dissapointing remaster. First of all it has enforced telemetry that you can not opt out of. At least it says it in the EULA, which is the very first thing that greets you when you open the game. Second of all they changed the art. In the original one, the characters had anime style art. For this one they tried to change it to more western art, but they didn't go full western style. So the art style is somewhere in the middle and feels very off. It also seems to have less character portaits for some reason. Third, they changed the combat ui (the match table graphics). It doesn't as smooth as the old one. They also changed the mana gems shape. Before all the mana gems had the same shape, so you knew it was mana gems and used to power your spells. You also knew that all other gems were important, as they had different shapes. Now each mana gems has it's own shape (each gem has it's own shape) making hard to distinguish their primary role and reducing the importance of the other gems (as they are no longer unique). Some people might see this change as a plus though. They also made some changes in the map ui, which I also feel are inferior. They removed the multiplayer (and the ability to upload and downlaod high scores from/to the internet). Generally it gives the sense that they copy / pasted the original and made some worse changes to justify being a new game. It seems like they remade the game in unity, which comes with it's own problems. Overall, you're better off buying the original version.

Lamer simulator

Let's start with the positives: the game is fun, and the idea of combining typical RPG mechanics with typical match-3 mechanics would be great. Unfortunately, what ruins everything is the AI, which happily cheats even on the normal difficulty level; enemies not only have a lot of health, but even worse, in just a few moves they can make combos (and deal a lot of damage) that result in incredibly lucky gem combinations, and this happens quite often. If you have a lot of patience, you might have fun; anyone else will be really pissed off.
