Beautiful, but some obvious flaws

I wanted to like this game, but overall it was a bit of a let down. I do hope the authors keep up the good work and improve the points I'll mention in the following. The art style is absolutely fantastic, exactly what I was hoping for, bringing back good vibes from my childhood. The music is okay, it mostly matches the atmosphere. The music playing in the druid hut (one of the early locations, and one you'll visit frequently) is incredibly annoying and should be replaced or simply removed in my opinion. The dialogs are full of typos and incorrect English (the German translation is also done poorly). If the devs want to release a patch, this is something that should be addressed with high priority. I like some amount of 4th walling, but it occurs way too early in the game, at a time when the player is not yet properly immersed in the game world. Many of the puzzles feel random and there are too few hints that nudge you in the right direction if you're stuck (perhaps a matter of taste; this is of course true to the spirit of early point&click adventure games). Besides the choice of language, there is not a single game setting to adjust, like windowed vs. full-screen, font size or text speed. On Linux the game freezes when you Alt-Tab to another window (probably an issue of AGS though. Run "pkill ags64" from your console when that happens to terminate the frozen process). Btw. the same issue also affects "The Castle" by the same company.

Excellent classic style adventure

"Legend of Skye" is clearly inspired by early 90s adventure games like "Monkey Island" and "Simon the Sorcerer". The puzzles are difficult but quite creative and I had a blast figuring them out. I absolutely recommend it.

Ok at its best

It's just super inconsistent puzzle design. And half the time you complete the puzzle and don't go "of course", but "yeah, sure." Maybe it's a translation thing, but it thinks it's funny without being funny at all. I'm still intrested in what they do next since it's long and it doesn't feel rushed at the end like most adventures.

A hidden gem

There comes a time that you play a game with no expectations and after you finish it (after 12 hours of solid gaming) it stays with you for a long time. While the Legend of Skye did not get a lot of attention, in reality it is a hidden gem. Probably many people brushed it off as it looks old and the theme doesn't seem so interesting but it is really worth a shot. The one and only developer, has gone to great lengths to make a game that reminds us of SCUMM magic at it's best. If I didn't know, I would think that it's a lost game from 1990, or what the MI developers had written as an alternative premise for their game. The humor is wonderful, the characters so enjoyable and varied, the graphics are a prime example of what a talented person can do with just 320x180 pixels. Above all though, this game is about puzzles. I am indeed a bit tired with more and more games becoming interactive novels instead of actual adventure GAMES. Games are supposed to be challenging; adventure games in particular are supposed to be asking us to use our imagination and wits in order to help our hero(ine) move forward with their quest. Dear developers, check Legend of Skye out, to remember what good imaginative puzzles look like. At least, design games where you can pick the level of difficulty at the beginning. People who want to just watch an interactive movie can go for the easy level, while others who want to get stuck and think can pick the expert level...Whatever happened to this option? The puzzles are indeed the strong point but also the story has something very relatable even if it's about druids. Native people losing their land, nature being destroyed as a sacrifice to "development" and the megalomaniac ambitions of the high classes. Rarely does one find adventure games with real-world relatable issues about such issues.

Classic - Enjoyed it very much…

I thought it has elements from Monkey Island 1, Simon the Sorcerer 1, Loom and games from that era, while still managing to maintain an own style without quoting too much. I liked the characters, the storytelling, the verb interface (which in some games just makes perfect sense) and the overall lovely retro visuals. Also the music is worth mentioning. But what I liked most was the atmosphere and the story driven puzzles. It felt just like playing one of those Lucas-Arts Games for the first time and hit exactly the sweet spot for me. When I got stuck, I kept thinking - what did I miss, how can I solve this - and I couldn’t wait to get back to it. It´s always clear what you have to do (like - I wanna be a pirate…) and when stuck, you will find all the clues when you pay more attention to the NPCs and surroundings. Solving the next step of a puzzle always felt very rewarding to me. I think this game is tribute and love letter to those old games and shows a deep understanding how they worked and why some of them still hold up so well. The only thing I would criticize maybe: Personally I would have preferred a little more Monkey Island 2 or Day of the tentacle style visuals. But maybe for a sequel? There is another game from the developer (which seems to be basically one guy) that is an homage to the first Maniac Mansion. Haven´t tried it yet, but I will. And there will be another one soon, which seems to be more of an Indiana Jones game. Anyways - The Legend of Skye is an easy recommendation. Best Point and Click adventure I played in a long time.
