Similar in some ways to Paradox games, but actually comprehensible with rationalized gameplay. Incredible story integration into a strategy game. Brilliant, in depth, incomparable.
If you like heavy strategy games, you will love Terra Invicta.
I will preface this review by saying this game is as niche as it gets. For those who occupy the niche, it will be the best game ever. For those outside the niche, they will hate it.
Do you spend your spare time reading project rho (atomic rockets website)? Are you a fan of hard scifi like the Expanse, Heinlein, etc? Do you like cold war esque spy thriller stuff? Do you like the idea of shadowy organizations pulling the strings behind every government? Do you like the idea of ship battles that adhere to the idea of newtonian mechanics? Do you like the idea of pouring over 40 different ship engines trying to figure out how to design the best ship for your current needs? If you answered yes to these questions you might like this game.
Do you hate having to open external resources to understand what to do? Do you hate obtuse user interfaces? Do you hate the idea of a game taking 100 to 300 hours to complete? Do you hate the idea of fighting an enemy who WILL beat you and destroy your hard work? Do you hate the idea of 95% of your gameplay being staring at a rotating earth? If you answered yes to these questions you might not like this game.
At its heart Terra Invicta is the quintessential 4x game. It is very hard to get into, there is a large learning curve, it can feel obtuse and nonsensical at first. You probably need to watch a bunch of youtube tutorial videos on it. But if you enjoy games like Dwarf Fortress or Stellaris, you'll be fine.
Still, it is a game definitely worth playing, with the caveat of a steep lerning curve, a few minor bugs, and a very long time commitment for even a single campaign. I look forward to what will become of it in years to come!
I rarely buy a game when it is first released let alone while it is in development, but this game had some great ideas and I wanted to try it and to support the developers.
While I love the idea, I didn't enjoy the game.... yet. At the moment (Feb 2023) there is simply too much going on. The developers need to find a way to really simplify some aspects of the game. For example, there are just too many different missions for your agents to take. Many are really very similar when you stand back and look at it. Gaining control of a country involves gaining popular support and then taking positions of power, but then opponents use different powers to "crackdown" or "create instability" or "coup d'etat" or "replace you people in power" or "assassinate your agents" or "detain" them. So, then you start taking defend and hide and stabilising actions etc. It's just not fun. I haven't even considered fighting wars or settling space etc. Why not just have one simple influnce score for each nation?
A game this big needs each of its' components to be REALLY TIGHT. The developers need to make some big cuts to this game, which will be hard to do. They need to distil down the essence of each aspect of the game into something simple so that when you put all the different theatres of operation back together, they are not too much for the player. I found myself missing the simplicity of X-com's strategic phase.
Rest the Aliens.
Serve the Aliens.
Ignore the Aliens.
Either way, they're already here.
It took a long time for me to get used to the interface and get the hang of the game, but once you get past its complexity, it's a beautifully crafted alien invasion simulator. I've played as sympathetic to the alien cause and a protector of humanity. Each playthrough is unique and offers its own set of challenges. Definitely recommended for fans of 4x games.
