SimCity™ 2000 Special Edition

.. and I deeply regret it. Simcity 2000 special edition is not only a truly enjoyable city builder but also an elegant flow of pixels, beautiful to watch and a gameplay somewhat simple when you figured it out how the system works. As a managerial simulation, it works well and it's not overly complicated ( although at the start you'll be probably overwhelmed by its interface, at least if you didn't play like this before) but it has enough depth to have a good replay value. However, if you read the reviews before mine, you'll know that this is the Dos-box version (Which may influence my judgement, since I'm a big fan of the old system) and it may share some problem common to the games of the Dos ( some clunky controls and some features are missing). Still, I truly recommend this game, even if it's my first Simcity I've ever played : Catchy tunes ( although a little repetitive), astonishing visuals when you expand your city and a solid gameplay that brings you to a lowly suburb to an exodus to the stars.

I used to play the windows version of this when I ran Windows XP. I had a 1600x1200 monitor and I could fit SO MUCH of my city on my screen. This dos version runs at 640x480 and the music is AWFUL. There's probably a windows version floating around somewhere that has been modified to work on a 64-bit operating system, I know they did it with Sim Tower and a few others. My opinion - the fact that it's a dos version is a deal breaker. Don't buy.

I loved this game growing up, and every other successful sim city game followed this model. If you like classic games and have never played this, you need to buy it now. Worth 6 stars out of 5.

SC2000 is a classic and works smooth. Back in the days, it was a 5 star jewel after which, over the years, some revised and improved versions were released, especially in terms of sound and especially for MacOs, before the arrival of SC3000. The one on GoG is the original DOS version, with all the pros and cons that this entails.

I've tried getting SimCity 2000 working on Linux several times and I've tried the DOS, 3.1, and 95 versions, all with varying issues. I finally got GOG's SC2K DOS version working perfectly after a few tweaks: Find the game folder in Wine and edit the `dosboxSC2000.conf` file with the following changes: ``` fullscreen=false # switches to windowed mode autolock=false # frees mouse cursor from DOS window output=ddraw scaler=normal2x forced # w/ ddraw, this doubles the size of the window ``` I also wasn't getting music until I went into "Game DOS Settings" on launch and under Sound Effects changed "MPU-401 General MIDI" to "Sound Blaster Compatible".
